Can a robot get human intelligence after being struck by lightning? In a science fiction comedy Short Circuit, yes, and it makes another lovable metallic friend to us all. An experimental military robot, named Number 5 aka Johnny 5, finds a home with Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy) who believes he's an alien. Here appears scientist Newton Crosby who must get to his creation before the army puts Number 5 out of service permanently. This is a PG-rated film making Short Circuit one of the best and family friendly features on our Robots, Cyborgs and Androids list. Next entry on the best Robots, Cyborgs and Androids films list is Westworld, a sci-fi Western thriller film written and directed by novelist Michael Crichton. Westworld is a theme park for the rich, the park's lifelike androids are programmed to indulge vacationers' every whim. The problems arise when androids malfunction and begin killing visitors, even though they're programmed never to harm the customers. This was always an inspiration for Crichton who later went to write a novel and co-write the script for Jurassic Park. Westworld's main character is the Gunslinger, played by Yul Brynner, joined by Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, and Norman Bartold among others. Westworld was succeeded by a sequel, Futureworld and a new HBO television series Westworld.

Star Wars franchise basically contains everything our list requires: robots, cyborgs and androids. The Empire Strikes Back is the second instalment in the original Star Wars trilogy. Droids appear in significant roles in the franchise, from R2-D2 and C-3PO to BB-8, the cutest thing about The Force Awakens. Coined by special effects artist John Stears, the term is a clipped form of "android", a word originally reserved for robots designed to look and act like a human. Even though they're considered second-class citizens in the story created by George Lucas, most of them show humanlike personalities and we often sympathize with them. With modern technology quickly advancing, some of these droids are not too impossible to imagine.

The Stepford Wives is a sci-fi horror thriller based on the 1972 Ira Levin novel of the same name. Joanna (Katherine Ross) reluctantly moves with her husband and children from New York City to the suburban Stepford. Life in the community begins to seem too perfect, so Joanna and her new friend investigate a mysterious conspiracy among the town's husbands. We won't spoil the film altogether, but as it is on our list, you can guess it involves robots, cyborgs and/or androids. The film gathered a cult following over the years, and got not-so-successful remake rewritten as a comedy The Stepford Wives starring Nicole Kidman. THX 1138 is a social sci-fi film directed by George Lucas, and this is his feature film directorial debut (developed from Lucas's student film). Robert Duvall stars as a man whose mind and body are controlled by the government in this unnerving exploration of the future. The film depicts a dystopian world in which the populace is controlled through android police officers. Can THX escape this horrific reality where love is the ultimate crime, and become a free individual? The film gathered a cult following largely after success Lucas acquired with Star Wars franchise. Nevertheless, check THX 1138 on DVD and Blu-ray to reach into potential future, especially with special features Theatre of Noise Experience and Lucas's Original Student Film.

Autobots, roll out. This common command used in the Transformers multiverse is familiar to all fans, including the fans of the film series. The Terminator is an epitome of cyborg/robot films with Skynet dominating the planet and planning to exterminate humanity.
