Nick and Nora Charles cordially invite you to bring your own alibi to The Thin Man, the jaunty whodunit that made William Powell and Myrna Loy the champagne elite of sleuthing, Bantering in the boudoir, enjoying walks with beloved dog Asta or matching each other highball for highball and clue for clue, they combined screwball romance with mystery. The resulting triumph nabbed four Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) and spawned five sequels. Credit W.S. " Woody" Van Dyke for recognizing that Powell and Loy were ideal together and for getting the studio's okay by promising to shoot this splendid adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel in three weeks. He took 12 days. They didn't call him "One-Take Woody" for nothing.

'Shakespeare in Love' is a romantic comedy for the 1990's set in the 1590's, telling the witty, sexy story behind the creation of the greatest love story of them all - Romeo and Juliet. Young Will Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is the up and coming playwright of the time but has been disastrously struck by the bane of the writer's life - writer's block. His comedy "Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter" is not going anywhere and the playhouse is under threat of closure. What will needs is a muse - and she appears in the form of the beautiful and (and betrothed) Lady Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow). The path of true love doesn't run smooth for young Will, however - Viola is engaged to be married to the insufferable Lord Wessex (Colin Firth) at the command of Queen Elizabeth (Judi Dench). The joys and tragedy of his own life find their way onto the page in a moving, witty and spellbinding tale.
In Francois Ozon's absorbing and affecting drama, Charlotte Rampling gives one of the best performances of her career as Marie, a college lecturer who has been happily married to Jean for over 25 years. Whilst on holiday, they visit a deserted beach where Marie lazes in the sun while Jean sets out for a swim - from which he never returns. Some time later in Paris, Marie has resumed her life but refuses to accept that Jean has drowned, continuing to think of him in the present tense and resisting her friends' well-meaning attempts to interest her in other men. Ozon's most mature film to date, 'Under the Sand' is dominated by Rampling's astonishing and moving portrayal.

Tout Va Bien (Everything's Going Fine) places Jane Fonda and Yves Montand in the roles of She and He, that is, a modern couple representative of the middle-class global bourgeoisie circa 1972. She's a radio journalist at the French bureau of the American Broadcasting System; he's an advertisement director who before '68's social upheavals served as a Nouvelle Vague screenwriter. Through Fonda's and Montand's star-personas, Godard and Gorin investigate 'how the sausage is made', both metaphorically (movie financing) and literally (industrial food processing) - in the process questioning what it means to be involved or 'engaged' socially, politically, and romantically.

Anna Neagle, Michael Wilding, Thora Hird and Jack Watling star in Herbert Wilcox's masterly drama of love across the social divide. A phenomenal box-office success whose themes resonated among cinema audiences amid the upheavals of post-war Britain, 'The Courtneys of Curzon Street' chronicles the changing fortunes of three generations of the aristocratic Courtney family - from the close of the nineteenth century, when Edward Courtney's marriage to his mother's Irish maid scandalises Victorian society, to the final days of the Second World War.
"Gang of Four" is a Pirandellian story of female camaraderie about four women studying and interpreting Marivaux's play "Double Infidelities" under a demanding acting teacher (Bulle Ogier). The four are swept up in a plot of terrorism which overlaps the plot lines of the play while the piece also begins to influence their off stage lives more and more. Each of the character's humanity is disturbingly revealed, layer by layer as the film evolves recalling Rivette's brilliant debut film, "Paris Nous Appartient". The climax of the film is utterly breathtaking.
