An American archaeologist (David Hartman) joins a rich English businessman, an eccentric French inventor, and an Eskimo trapper (Mako), on an awe-inspiring expedition to the Arctic. They're looking for a missing son, but they discover a world forgotten by time - a world of 10th-century Vikings, erupting volcanoes, and the legendary whales' graveyard!
A group of lonely Viking women build a ship and set off across the sea to locate their missing menfolk who have not returned from an earlier voyage. As they are sailing they are caught in a whirlpool that sends them near a hideous sea serpent and their boat is destroyed. The survivors make their way to an island, the land of the Grimolts...a race of people that have enslaved all the unfortunate beings that land on their territory, including the Viking men who have been forced to work down their mines. The women must battle to save their men and themselves.
In their third and final collaboration, Cameron Mitchell stars for Mario Bava as a Viking drifter torn between guilt, vengeance and his love for a peasant woman and her young srin. Co-written by Bava (as John Hold), the film delivers robust raping and pillaging yet proffers a uniquely humanist approach that virtually re-imagines Shane as a Viking drama. The result transcends its typically chest-thumping genre to emerge as one of Bava's most emotionally complex and visually compelling films.
