L'Appartement is a fanciful and romantic tale of love and obsession. A blend of Gallic romanticism and Hitchcockian style, this film is a delicious pastiche of five people's passions and lives. The story circles around Max (Vincent Cassel), on the verge of getting married, who suddenly overhears the voice of Lisa (Monica Bellucci), his long-lost love, arguing emotionally on the phone outside the men's room. He manages to track down her apartment, but in it he discovers another woman, who claims to be the Lisa he has overheard. She seduces him and manages to become the focus of his attention. Live and Become (2005)Va, vis et deviens
Live and Become is a gripping story of deception and survival. A beautifully crafted coming of age tale about the fate of a young refugee, told with warmth and humour. The story begins in 1984, when civil war and famine drove hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians into refugee camps in Sudan. Among them were the Falashas, Ethiopian Jews who claim direct lineage back to King Solomon's days. Amid the chaos, as the operation to take 10,000 Falashas to Israel begins, a starving Christian woman entrusts her nine-year old son to a bereaved Falasha mother. Arriving in Tel Aviv, the boy is declared an orphan and adopted by a local French family. Perhaps his most famous film, La Dolce Vita slices into the decadent amoral core of Roman society with Fellini's trademark attention to detail and spectacular photography. Marcello Mastroianni plays a gossip columnist (the term 'paparazzi' derives from the in a film) who aspires to be a more serious writer but knows he never will be, because like society, he is fascinated by the decadent hedonist pursuits which are seemingly everywhere. The Vatican was appalled by the film, but the public adored it, relishing the images Fellini fed them, most notably the now infamous scene of Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg frolicking in the Trevi Fountain. - Director:
