One of the BBC's earliest domestic sitcoms, "Meet the Wife" affectionately dissects the trials and comforts of mid-life marriage after the kids have flown the nest. Written by Ronald Chesney and Ronald Wolfe, and running to five seasons from 1963 to 1966, the series was immortalised in The Beaties' 'Good Morning, Good Morning': "It's time for tea and Meet the Wife". Thora and Fred Blacklock (Thora Hird and Freddie Frinton) are a middle-aged couple in the north of England, just about managing to make ends meet. Fred is an amiable, hard-working plumber who likes a bet and a pint on the way home, while Thora is an incessant talker with ideas of improving the couple's social standing. Although happy to chatter at Fred in her normal northern accent, in company or on the phone she unfailingly puts on her posh voice - much to Fred's annoyance. Despite Thora's limitless pickiness and bickering - usually over the most trivial things - there's genuine affection between the pair, and Fred's patience rarely reaches breaking point. It's a partnership that struck a chord with the British public, and confrmed Hird as the nation's favourite comic actress. Contains all remaining episodes from series 1-5, including the pilot episode 'The Bed'.
Darling (1965)
Julie Christie won an Oscar for her role as an ambitious model searching for new experiences. Using a stream of famous and infamous to sexually manipulate her way to the top, she becomes a prisoner of the jet-set lifestyle she herself conquered.
The L-Shaped Room (1962)
Leslie Caron plays a French girl facing life in a shabby, suburban bedsit after being jilted and left pregnant. Sharing her desperation with an assortment of neighbours, this is a sensitive study of social morals at the dawning of the Sixties sexual revolution.
Young bachelor, Terry Scott lives with his mother at 33 Lobelia Avenue in Tooting. He passes his days dreaming of easy wealth - no hard work required. Simpleton, Hugh Lloyd is Terry's lodger. When he's not hard at work at the local aircraft factory, he whiles away his free time getting haplessly roped into Terry's get-rich-quick schemes. This hilarious sitcom sees the unlikely twosome encounter all sorts of scrapes and mishaps as bully boy Terry pursues wealth and glory, with the kind but dim-witted Hugh trailing along behind.
An epic adventure filled with magic and wonder for the entire family based on the classic novel by E. Nesbit. When a family of four children uncover a mysterious egg hidden in the folds of their new carpet, an ancient Phoenix is reborn and powerful magic is unleashed. The children's lives are transformed as they discover the carpet's power to take them anywhere they want and to bring them anything they wish for! Adventures through time and space ensue as the children wish to visit South Sea Islands... but discover wishes are strictly limited! The video also features the Psammead, a magical sand sprite.
