In a deserted Macedonian village, Hatidze, a 50-something woman, trudges up a hillside to check her bee colonies nestled in the rocks. Serenading them with a secret chant, she gently manoeuvres the honeycomb without netting or gloves. Back at her homestead, Hatidze tends to her handmade hives and her bedridden mother, occasionally heading to the capital to market her wares. One day, an itinerant family installs itself next door, and Hatidze's peaceful kingdom gives way to roaring engines, seven shrieking children, and 150 cows. Yet Hatidze welcomes the camaraderie, and she holds nothing back - not her tried-and-true beekeeping advice, not her affection, not her special brandy. Donald Pleasence and Francoise Dorleac play a mismatched couple - he effeminate and petulant, she sensual and enigmatic - who share a bizzare sexual relationship, living in a remote castle. Their very isolation from the world prevents their eccentric partnership from foundering. Only an outsider can disrupt their make-believe lifestyle. That disruption arrives in the belligerent form of Richard and Albert, two oddball gangsters straight out of a 1940's film noir, wounded, desperate and on the run. They demand shelter, and as Richard waits for instructions from his gangland boss, he slips into a dangerous round of gameplaying with his unwilling hosts. But it seems that Richard is not always to have the upper hand. With its larger-than-life performances, wicked black humour and superb use of striking outdoor locations - the film was shot on Holy Island in Northumberland - Polanski has created an exceptional film which is very different to but no less memorable than Repulsion.

Fourteen-year-old Joe (Ed Oxenbould) is the only child of Jeanette (Carey Mulligan) and Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal) - a housewife and a golf pro - living a seemingly idyllic life in 1960's Montana. His family's carefully constructed façade is about to come crashing spectacularly down, however, when Jerry loses his job - and his sense of purpose. In an attempt to restore his pride, Jerry takes off for the summer to help fight the wildfires raging near the Canadian border, a life-threatening job, for very little pay. An angry and bereft Jeanette must quickly learn to fend for herself, and does so with gusty, challenging cultural expectations and taking a quietly bewildered Joe along for the ride.
