Where do you start with this? Totally off the wall, narrative is split between "His and "Hers" but most of the impact is in the bizarre and frankly kinky scenes showing Asuka Kurusawa in the clammy hands of a blackmailer.
The star is director Richard Ayoade, who stuffs every moment of this film with sight gags and visual trickery. Laughs aplenty but hero Oliver and his unmoored parents communicate a growing sense of melancholy too.
Absolute classic by Stefano Sollima- so much going on, so stylishly handled. Bad behaviour from all concerned, rain-washed Rome looks great and it's hard not to cheer two unlikely heroes in their struggle to survive.
Both of these are great but Tony Manero has pride of place on my shelf. A John Travolta obsessive with a mean streak trying to get famous while dodging Pinochet's goons? What's not to like?
