'Paris, Texas' is probably Wim Wenders' most well known, critically acclaimed, and successful movie, winning a number of international prizes including the Cannes Palm D'Or for best film in 1984. This unusual road movie, with screenplay by acclaimed playwright Sam Shepard, tells the tale of Travis, a man lost in his own private hell. Presumed dead for four years, he reappears from the desert on the Mexico border, world-weary and an amnesiac. He traces his brother Walt who is bringing up Hunter, his seven-year-old son, his ex-wife Jane having abandoned him at Walt's door several years before. As virtual strangers, Hunter and Travis begin to build a wary friendship and conspire to find Jane and bring her back to be a real family. With extraordinary performances from Harry Dean Stanton as Travis and Nastassja Kinski as Jane, the film also boasts a soundtrack by Ry Cooder, ideally suited to the film's sunbleached landscapes and melancholy undertones.
Andrzej Wajda's dazzling Man of Marble is one of the key films of the 1970s. Often described as the 'Polish Citizen Kane', Wajda's epic masterwork operates as both an electrifying political saga and a compelling analysis of the nature of cinema itself. Mateusz Birkut, a bricklayer, glorified as a State-promoted 'Worker's Hero' is subsequently removed from all official mention in 1952. In 1976 a young filmmaker, Agnieszka, obsessively pursues his story. Birkut's rise and fall and disappearance into obscurity provides Wajda with a framework for a brave reassessment of the period. Although suppressed by the authorities, Man of Marble became a milestone in Polish cinema and an undoubted influence in the dismantling of the totalitarian system in Poland.

From acclaimed filmmaker Mia Hansen-Love (Eden, Things to Come), 'Bergman Island' is a dazzling and bittersweet romantic drama set on the breathtaking island of Faro, where revered filmmaker Ingmar Bergman lived and worked for over forty years. Chris (Vicky Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth) are filmmakers, hoping to find inspiration fortheir next films as they retreat to the Swedish island to work on their screenplays. Meanwhile Amy (Mia Wasikowska) and Joseph (Anders Danielsen Lie), who were once lovers, are staying on Fcird to celebrate the wedding of their friend. As the summer passes by, the lines between reality and fiction become increasingly blurred as reminders of Bergman's legacy playfully influence both stories. Laced with characteristically semi-autobiographical elements, Hansen-Love's latest is a mischievous and elegant contemplation of love, memory and the journey of the creative process.

"Rembetiko" is a passionate exploration of rembetika music: a form of urban blues that expresses the history and depth of Greek culture. The film mirrors the music's style, offering a glimpse into that culture through a heart-wrenching story written and directed by Costas Ferris and a haunting original score written by Stavros Xarhakos. 'Rembetiko charts' the tragic true story of one of Greece's most popular rembetiko singers, Marika Ninou (Sotiria Leonardou): her professional successes and personal disasters. Her rise as a singer is shadowed by key moments in Greek history from such as the Nazi occupation and the Civil War. Her life is full of torment, and her pain is evident in her singing. Marika Ninou is as cherished in Greece as Edith Piaf is in France. This is her vie en rose.

After giving birth to twin sons, the couple elope to Thessaloniki in an attempt to start anew. Krysztof Kieslowski?'s 'A Short Film About Love' was expanded from one of the most lyrical episodes in 'Dekalog', his celebrated cycle of short films based on the Ten Commandments. A young man falls in love with an older woman who lives across the courtyard in the same Warsaw apartment block. He watches her and her succession of lovers until she becomes aware of his spying and confronts him with a sexual invitation.
The ghost of a young lawyer, Antek (Jerzy Radziwilowicz), observes the realm of the living in the Poland of 1982, during the country's period of martial law. Thanks to the help of his widow, Ulla (Grazyna Szapolowska), one of Antek's former clients - a worker accused of being an opposition activist - will be now defended by one of Antek's colleagues - an older, experienced lawyer. But Ulla herself finds life without her beloved husband increasingly hard to cope with and must make a difficult choice. A highly original blend of ghost story, political drama and meditation on the nature of love, 'No End' was Kieslowski's first collaboration with writer Krzysztof Piesiewicz and composer Zbigniew Preisner, with whom he would continue to work with on all his subsequent films.
