"The Public Enemy" showcases James Cagney's powerful 1931 breakthrough performance as streetwise tough guy Tom Powers, but only because production chief Darryl F. Zanuck made a late casting change. When shooting began, Cagney had a secondary role but Zanuck soon spotted Cagney's screen dominance and gave him the star part. From that moment, an indelible genre classic and an enduring star career were both born. Bristling with '20s style, dialogue and desperation under the masterful directorial eye of William A. Wellman, this is a virtual time capsule of the Prohibition era: taut, gritty and hard-hitting - even at breakfast when grapefruit is served.
In the space of ten years Buster Keaton made his way to becoming one of the Silent era's most remarkable comedians only to fall from grace when his now-acknowledged classic, 'The General', bombed at the box office and he found himself reduced to writing gags for the Marx Brothers and forcibly partnered up with lesser performers by the studios to whom he was contracted. This Emmy award-winning documentary from acclaimed writers and producers David Gill and Kevin Brownlow, who are the acknowledged worldwide experts on the silent movie-making era presents Buster's remarkable story and includes rare and unpublished material that shows how he did some of his most famous stunts, interviews with his widow, Eleanor, and other people who knew him as well as a unique interview with Keaton himself.
Episode One
Covering Keaton's early years - from being a child performer in vaudeville to the creation of his masterpiece, 'The Navigator', in 1924.
Episode Two
Keaton's finest film, 'The General', also cost him his creative freedom. It would be thirty years before his genius was properly recognised.
Episode Three
The great Keaton revival began in 1949 with a tribute in Life Magazine to the silent comics. By the time Keaton died in 1966 he has been acclaimed as one of the giants of the cinema.

"Nobody's Fool" is about as sublime a movie as is likely to come out of Hollywood. It's rare to sit through a drama and not feel manipulated, but the feelings generated by Robert Benton's movie are entirely natural, and likely to bring a smile to the heart... Paul Newman gives an unforgettable, Oscar-nominated performance as Sully, a cantankerous aging man living in a small, snowbound town. With the spirit of a mischievous teenager but the body of a sixty year old, Sully has the kind of infectious presence that, in his own words, "grows on you". He flutters in and out of work at a construction business run by Carl Roebuck (Bruce Willis, in a fine supporting role), a womanizer who can't stay faithful to his gentle and patient wife (Melanie Griffith). Jessica Tandy, in her final movie role, plays Sully's ex-teacher/landlord, a woman who sees in Sully the man he could have been. Their relationship provides the story with its solid heart. "Nobody's Fool" is as much about regrets as about choices made; as much about the road not taken as the one travelled. It's about families broken apart, and parent/child relationships mended. Quiet and enchanting in its simplicity, "Nobody's Fool" is a joy. Admittedly, it meanders a bit, but that's part of its charm. The intelligent sensitivity of the script, coupled with Newman's powerfully understated performance, make this motion picture special. There aren't many of them like this out there....
