Cahit, bedraggled and in a neck brace after driving his car into a wall, is more than a little surprised when beautiful, scarred Sibel proposes marriage - especially considering they met through their mutual desire to commit suicide. Cahit's Turkish blood is enough to satisfy Sibel's overbearing family and the two begin an unlikely marriage of convenience that has the even more unlikely consequence of making them want to live. Raw and uncompromising, director Fatih Akin's unparalleled energy and treatment of second generation Turkish families in Germany are reflected in the electrifying performances of the two leads: Birol Unel who celebrates poetic self-destruction like Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison and Sibel Kekilli who was discovered in a shopping centre. Together they create a compelling chemistry that will grip you from the first frame to the last.

Federlco Fellini's epic 1980 fantasia introduced the start of the Maestro's delirious late period. A surrealist tour-de-force filmed on soundstages and locations alike, and overflowing with the same sensory (and sensual) invention heretofore found only in the classic movie-musicals (and Fellini's own oeuvre), La citta delle donne (City of Women) taps into the era's restless youth-culture, coalescing into nothing less than Fellini's post-punk opus. Marcello Mastroianni appears as Fellini's alter ego in a semi-reprise of his character from 8 1/2, Snaporaz. As though passing into a dream, the charismatic avatar finds himself initiated into a phantasmagoric world where women - or an idea of women - have taken power, and which is structured like an array of psychosexual set-pieces - culminating in a bravura hot-air balloon that decisively sticks the "anti" up into "climax". A great adventure "through the looking-glass", as it were, of Fellini's own phallic lens and life-long libidinal ruminations, La citta delle donne sharply divided critics at the 1980 Festival de Cannes, some of whom had merely anticipated a nostalgic retread of the earlier Mastroianni works. What they were greeted with, and what remains today, is, in the words of Serge Daney, "a victory of cinema".

A Tokyo suburb buzzing with gossip is the backdrop to Ozu’s cheerful comedy, 'Good Morning' (1959). Disillusioned with the meaningless talk of their elders, two brothers take a vow of silence when their parents refuse to buy them a TV. 'Good Morning' pokes fun at the silliness of everyday chatter whilst gently acknowledging its fundamental necessity. Also included here is Ozu’s superb early comedy 'I Was Born, But...' (1932) The forerunner of 'Good Morning', this silent masterpiece contains many similar themes but has a darker edge. As brothers Ryoichi and Keiji struggle to outwit the local bully and scale the pecking order in their new neighbourhood they find out that injustice does not end with school.
Dita Parlo stars as a young bride who begins married life aboard her husband's barge on the Seine. But within the boat's cramped confines, shared with a small crew (including the eccentric Pere Jules, memorably played by Michel Simon) and an abundance of cats, the relationship begins to founder. Vigo imbues this simple tale, beautifully shot by Boris Kaufman, with social realism, lyrical romance and sensual eroticism to create a unique and enduring classic.

Screen classics such as Sweeney Todd and Maria Marten established him as Britain's top horror movie star after Boris Karloff. Whether it was wholesale murder, larceny, blackmail, unbridled madness or torture, Tod Slaughter delighted his cinema audiences by playing the foulest of villains. This disk contains three of Slaughter's previously unreleased films, the most famous of which is the digitally re-mastered "The Face at the Window" in which a series of grisly murders in nineteenth century France is attributed to a wolf-man. "The Crimes of Stephen Hawke" sees Slaughter as 'The Spinebreaker', a crazed killer stalking London. The final film in this epic Tod trilogy is "It's Never Too Late to Mend" where an evil prison governor presides over a cruel reign of torture to his inmates until an uprising sees him take a dose of his own medicine...
