Eurocrime! (2012)Eurocrime!: The Italian Cop and Gangster Films That Ruled the '70s
If you're a fan of cult movies and have a taste for adventure, buckle up and get ready for a wild ride into the dizzying world of Eurocrime! Step back to a time when the streets ran amok with supermarket robbers and handbag-snatching pillion riders; when criminality had hit an all-time low and there was Nothing lowlife gangs weren't capable of. Out of the darkness rose a group of uncompromising, moustachioed cops who ruled supreme in their cities: lone crusaders who were often as brutal as their quarry. Welcome to Italy of the 1970s - a sleazy, lawless frontier unlike anything witnessed anywhere else in cinema, and the backdrop for the poliziotteschi or, as it's since become known, the Eurocrime genre. Given their history of cinematic thievery, Eurocrime was the Italian answer to Hollywood's Dirty Harry and The French Connection - but classics as they are, neither of the American films dared to delve into the depths of depravity heir Italian counterparts did. In a period of less than a decade directors such as Umberto Lenzi, Sergio Martino and Enzo G. Castellari made hundreds of these films and they've been one of cinema's best kept secrets - until now! This exhaustive, feature-length documentary lifts the lid on the genre and features a roll call of many of its biggest stars sharing anecdotes and revealing they're as larger-than-life in real life as they were in the films! Prepare yourself for a fascinating glimpse into the past that revives an often overlooked corner of cult filmdom and showcases tough-talking lawmen, high octane car chases and devastating fashion faux pas!
Nazi-cinema was a state-controlled industry, subject to rigid political and cultural censorship. At the same time, it aspired to be Great Cinema; it viewed itself as an ideological and aesthetic alternative to Hollywood. A German dream factory. Rüdiger Suchsland's 'Hitler's Hollywood' takes a closer look at the roughly 1000 feature films made in Germany between 1933-1945, examining how stereotypes of the enemy and values of love and hate managed to be planted, into the heads of the German people, through the cinema screens.
In a mesmerising career best, Matt Dillion plays failed architect turned serial killer Jack, who over the span of 12 years leads us through his thought processes behind his increasingly depraved acts of murder which he names 'incidents'. With a supporting cast that includes Bruno Gantz, Uma Thurman, Riley Keough and Sofie Grabol, Lars von Trier returns to the directors chair with the original uncut version of his most daring and shocking film to date.
Gaspar Noe, director of the hugely controversial 'Irreversible', 'Enter the Void' and 'Love', makes a triumphant return with 'Climax' - a visually dazzling feast of music and mayhem, and perhaps his most critically acclaimed work to date. Following a successful rehearsal, a dance troupe set about celebrating with a party. But when it becomes apparent that someone has spiked the sangria, the joyous atmosphere soon transforms into a nightmarish hellscape of violence and twisted carnality as the dancers begin to turn on each other in an orgiastic frenzy. Inspired equally by the worlds of modern dance and esoteric arthouse-horror (chief among them, Dario Argento's Suspiria and Andrzej Zutawski's Possession), 'Climax' - which pulses towards its astonishing conclusion with a thumping score by the likes of Daft Punk, Aphex Twin and Gary Numan - illustrates a director at the height of his hallucinatory filmmaking powers.
He was the world-renowned King of Pop Art - and his life was about to take a dramatic turn in exchange for someone else's fifteen minutes of fame! Starring Lili Taylor (Ransom) and Jared Harris (Igby Goes Down), and winner of the Sundance Film Festival's Special Jury Award, this vibrant, touching and thoroughly entertaining film explores the provocative story behind the shooting of '60s superstar Andy Warhol. Valerie Solanas (Taylor), a lesbian writer, loner and prostitute has come to the Big Apple with one goal in mind: to spread the gospel of her radical feminism. Desperate for an audience, she latches on to the fringes of Warhol's (Harris) glamorous sex-and-drug-laced Factory scene. But as her zeal swerves dangerously out of control, her private madness leads to a bizarre obsession with the artist himself - and a final, explosive act of violence that not only gets her noticed... but makes her manifesto infamous.
Pacing a vibrantly colored art studio celebrity novelist, artist and enfant-terribie Kyoko (Ami Tomite) terrorizes everyone around her, especially her eager-to-please assistant Noriko (Mariko Tsutsui), whom she sadistically (and quite literally) keeps on a leash. Just as Kyoto's cruelty reaches its peak, however, the film takes an unexpected about-face that, in true Sono-style, breaks down cinematic barriers in order to tackle the subjects of art, misogyny and freedom with boundless energy and unbridled passion.
Jesse Lujack (Richard Gere) is a small-time car thief who loves livin', Jerry Lee Lewis and his Silver Surfer comic books. But most of all, Jessie loves Monica (Valerie Kaprisky), the sexy French architecture student he just met in Vegas. Determined to provide her with the good life, Jesse uses all his rockabilly charm to convince the resistant Monica to drop everything and join him on a trip to sunny Mexico in a fire-red Caddy with the top down and the woman he loves finally at his side, Jessie feels on top of the world. But no matter how much rubber he burns, there's something that Jessie just can't outrun. As he races faster and faster away from his past and toward his dreams, Jessie must keep everything that's important to him - especially Monica - close by his side...or risk losing them forever!
Filmed on the virtually deserved Setonaikai archipelago in south-west Japan. The Naked Island tells the story of a small family unit and their subsistence as the only inhabitants of an arid, sun-baked island. Daily chores, captured as a series of cyclical events, result in a hypnotizing, moving, and beautiful film harkening back to the silent era.
Edward Said was born in Jerusalem in 1935. Internationally acclaimed for his books on literature (Beginnings, The World The Text and The Critic), politics (The Question of Palestine, Covering Islam) and the intersection of politics and culture (Orientalism, Culture and Imperialism), Said was the most prominent spokesman for the Palestinian cause outside the Middle East as well as an accomplished musician. Diagnosed with incurable leukemia in 1991, towards the end of his life Said simply stopped giving interviews. But in November 2002 he made a final exception, and over the course of three days spoke with unparalleled intimacy about his illness, his work, his own life and education, and his enduring preoccupations. This video contains a complete record of those conversations, and has been edited only to remove repetitions or discussion among the filmmakers. Edward Said died on September 24 2003.
