Alan Ladd plays the titular gunslinger, the archetypal "man alone" who wanders into town and shortly afterward becomes embroiled in a conflict between a group of Wyoming homesteaders and the nefarious cattle baron who has designs to wrest away their land. As the conflict escalates, and a romance develops between Shane and homesteader Marian Starrett (Jean Arthur, in her last screen role), a who's-who of studio system character talent revolves through the production - Van Heflin, Jack Palance, Elisha Cook, Jr. - before one of cinema's most famous, unforgettable endings.

Sir Denis Thatcher died in June 2003 aged 88. Despite his prominence as consort to his wife Margaret, he never spoke to the media, until he was persuaded by his daughter, Carol, to give his first, last and only TV interview to her, shortly before he died. In the interview Denis finally pronounces on the people, places and politics of the Thatcher years. He has plenty to say on everyone from Nancy Reagan to Raisa Gorbachev, from the IRA to the post Thatcher Tory Party, and of course... Maggie. The film also contains an interview with Margaret Thatcher, who despite her vow not to speak again in public, was keen to talk about what Denis had meant to her and the part their marriage played in her premiership. Bernard Ingham recalls he had many terms for his favourite tipple. "An opener, a brightener, a lifter, a tincture, a large gin and tonic, without the tonic, a snifter, a snort, a snorter. And a snorterino, which more or less empties the bottle in one go".

"What Happened, Miss Simone?" is the story of Nina Simone's life and career. Through archival interviews, extensive performance footage, and new interviews with family, friends, and colleagues, it paints a fascinating portrait of this complex and challenging artist. Nina Simone was many things: pianist, singer, songwriter, performer, civil rights campaigner, wife and mother, victim of abuse and black icon. Growing up in the segregated American South, she began to learn piano at age 4, attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York and aspired to a career as a concert pianist. Believing she was denied admission to the Curtis Institute because of her race, she began to play in nightclubs to earn money and her career as a jazz and blues performer was born. The film follows Nina Simone through the sixties and her intense involvement in the civil rights movement, her decision to relocate to first Africa and then Europe in the early seventies, her emotional difficulties in the eighties and her later years in France in the nineties. "What Happened, Miss Simone?" is a captivating film about an extraordinary and influential artist who will continue to be revered for generations to come.
Archive footage as well as more recent film gives us a taste of this most interesting area of England with its historic cities, industrial valleys and heather-clad moors. Starting in the historic city of York, our first visit is to the Minster with its rich history. The Minster itself has changed little over time despite the disastrous fire of 1984 that destroyed the south transept roof. York also provides us with interesting glimpses of the Shambles where the roofs of the buildings almost touch in the middle, the Multangular Tower which is the only Roman tower still in existence in the city, the railway station and the National Railway Museum. From here we travel to the Victorian spa town of Harrogate, famous for its healing waters, before we head to the industrial towns of Leeds and Bradford and see the difference in types of vehicle on the road then with horse trams, steam trams, electric trams, haulier carts and bicycles. We then head off to Sheffield and get a glimpse of the steel industry in its heyday and then it's on to the Meadowhall Shopping Centre, built on a site previously owned by the steel works, before we finish our round up of this area at Goole, one of the most important ports in the east of England.
This feature-length documentary examines the prime-ministerial career of Tony Blair and his business activities since leaving office - a role described as 'The Blair Rich Project'. Combining testimony from prominent observers, ambassadors and statesmen, with extensive archive footage, animation and illustrations from the award-winning political cartoonist Steve Bell, George Galloway sets out his argument that, despite good things that his government achieved, Tony Blair's actions since leaving office reveal that his overriding motivation may have always been a messianic pursuit of personal glory and financial reward.
Melodrama casts noirish shadows in this portrait of maternal sacrifice from Hollywood master Michael Curtiz. Its iconic performance by Joan Crawford as Mildred, a single mother hell-bent on freeing her children from the stigma of economic hardship, solidified Crawford's career comeback and gave the actor her only Oscar. But as Mildred pulls herself up by the bootstraps, first as an unflappable waitress and eventually as the well-heeled owner of a successful restaurant chain, the ingratitude of her materialistic firstborn (a diabolical Ann Blyth) becomes a venomous serpent's tooth, setting in motion an endless cycle of desperate overtures and heartless recriminations. Recasting James M. Cain's rich psychological novel as a murder mystery, this bitter cocktail of blind parental love and all-American ambition is both unremittingly hard-boiled and sumptuously emotional.
"Humans" is a thrilling drama series, written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a 'synth' - a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar in appearance to humans. These incredible machines share our homes, our jobs and our lives and so become the objects of our fear, hatred, lust and even love. The Hawkins family struggles to put past events behind them. Their efforts are complicated further when they are unexpectedly drawn into battles being waged by their old conscious synth friends. As their emotional capabilities expand, the synths are pushed to the limit as they confront huge moral questions about their place in the world. While a mysterious organisation threatens to exploit the precious secret behind conscious synthetics, the possibilities and limitations of relationships between synth-kind and humankind are put to the ultimate test.
