I saw this in the 1970s and with rather indifferent sound in the cinema struggled to follow some of the dialogue. Enjoyed revisiting it. It's a very tight focussed narrative. Some current parallels!
An entertaining and intelligent film with beautiful photography.
The minor parts are mostly played by excellent British actors. Pete Postlethwaite plays a (non-speaking) barber, Liz Smith a Tarot reader.
Maybe rather more sentimental than Les Parapluies de Cherbourg but an attractive watch with some lovely dancing - one of the leading men was in West Side Story.
