This is a film that could have come out of some third rate art student’s portfolio. It has a Blair Witch energy that does not endear. Somebody is trying too hard to be arty-farty and clever but fails. Some good actors frankly wasted their talents here with a director who has had an imagination lobotomy. Avoid.
No plot spoilers here. I struggled with the sheer awfulness of the two main leads in the beginning which was the whole point. As the plot progressed it became ever more amusing as the symbolism and metaphors became clearer. Genuinely good acting though the directing was occasionally patchy. Well worth a watch as the plot has as lovely circular twist.
Look, sci-fi stretches the imagination but this? Absurd. The plot is weak. It’s made up as they go along. By the end I really didn’t if the entire cast got swallowed up and we were left in blissful silence.
About as subtle as calling a spade a f’ing shovel. Tactless, predictable and to be avoided unless you’ve imbibed copious quantities of something recreational. Which would be a waste if you did. So don’t.
There’s a serious message here behind the stereotypes, biting satire, genuine humour, horror, love and sadness. In these increasingly populist and openly xenophobic racist days, there’s an echo from history to pay heed to. An excellent film. I commend it. Unless you’re a Nazi.
I have a raised tolerance for watching intolerable films. This one however, took the biscuit.
Horror? Nope. Even by 1977 standards it’s dismal. The special FX look as if they’re from silent era movies.
Deep and meaningful? Maybe. Sadly I appear to be well out of my depth trying to guess meanings that even Lynch is unable to articulate. I Googled around a bit for enlightenment. And failed. Frankly, I don’t want to work that hard trying to polish this turd.
This could have been done waaaaay better.
Guy Martin is fine. What he's doing is fine. But the narrating voice-over... OMFG. Some bloke who used to do super-macho ads for men's de-odourent in the 70's (STINX.... For When Real Men Get High) has found himself trying to inject tension into every.single.blasted.line. he already delivers badly.
I pulled the plug about 20 mins in. My life is just too short.
Loved the music and enjoyed the film. The acting was rather good and the story, well perhaps a little clichéd but also close enough to real life.
Over-saccharined Christian drivel. Should have been animated and aimed at the 4 year olds whose parents want them to go to church. I have sat through some really difficult films in my time but this defeated me.
Do yourself a favour. AVOID.
Clooney finds his medicine doesn't really work and ends up, well, let's not ruin the plot. I enjoyed this gentle but meaningful film which gives us a dose of reality.
So a poor gay black kid gets taken under wing of a nice black drug dealer and grows up... a nice gay black drug dealer. It took a looong time to narrate and honestly, 2 stars is being generous. A film for people with a very high boredom threshold and very good hearing.
I'm going to focus on the quality of the DVD.
Yes, I tried another DVD which played perfectly. before you ask.
The image is really lo-res, so: fuzzy. The colours muted. The contrast is abysmal, a shadow on a face looks like a massive purple bruise for instance.
Was I unlucky or what? I don't know. I'm still waiting for CP to help me out here.
