This was a lovely film that really made us reflect on its content long after the final credits. Tremendous acting from all involved and yet again, fine directing by Céline Sciamma, and the costuming, the lighting and the sets were so well created. And the movie touched on storyline elements that would have been completely taboo at the time, nay even fifty years ago.
The structure of this film is really fascinating, and beautifully captures the style and nuances of Edward Hopper's work, at the same time offering a wonderfully paced storyline spanning four decades. Beautiful décors, superb lighting, and music that entirely complements the visuals.
I watched this film expecting more than I got, being a fan of Scandinavian films and TV series. I found it somewhat formulaic and although the storyline was interesting, it hardly shone new light on the issues involved.
We watched this film mid-covid time. What a heart-warming and thoroughly evocative movie. Agnès Varda has long been a favourite, and this beautiful swansong maintained our feelings about her work. Her relationship with JR was so well observed, he an equal throughout the film, and his work should be more widely recognised. An outstanding movie, fully deserving the five stars we have given it.
