The Princess Bride

Go with it - but do keep up

(Edit) 30/07/2021

I read one review that said this was old fashioned and non pc. That seems to wholly miss the point. It's a crazy, funny and witty film, which constantly makes fun of a whole raft of genres, particularly its own- but in a playful and rather post modern way. You can watch this with a child, or watch as a grown up - there is plenty to enjoy either way. There's always something new to spot - great cameos, hilarious action scenes (some genuinely emotional) and also some of the most iconic lines in film. You do have to watch it to get it. Any film framed by Peter Falk gets my vote too, any day (Wings of Desire and The Princess Bride - both classics). There's nothing quite like it. RIP Rob Reiner.

The Keeper

Engaging true story

(Edit) 06/07/2021

It was great to watch this, knowing it was based on true events, with two others who had no idea it was based on a real person. As it became clearer that it was true, it was more engaging. Yes, sure, there was emotional manipulation, but the story was (is) so amazing it is well worth telling. The football matches were effectively recreated, and the relationship at the core felt real. Everyone who didn't know the story immediately googled "Bert Trautmann" afterwards and were amazed. A story worth telling, for all sorts of reasons.

Speed

Fun for all the family!

(Edit) 03/03/2021

We're watching films with our teenage son at the moment, and it can be a struggle to find films that suit us all. Speed really fitted the bill. There was genuine tension, a fabulous and hilarious villain in Dennis Hopper, and it also helped my son to make sense of that Father Ted episode...

Back to the Future

Back to Back to the Future

(Edit) 03/03/2021

I worried this would feel too dated or childish to watch with my teenage son, but I should have had faith (even though it was slightly uncomfortable watching the bits with Marty and his mum!). This stood up to the test of time, was full of sly jokes and fun, and had enough tension and action to keep us all involved.
