This is definitely a movie you will either love or hate. It was the former for me. I loved the design and even the extreme use of 4mm wide angle lenses. It starts out as a Frankenstein-type film in monchrome with many references to the early twentieth-century movies of that ilk.
Later scenes in colour are dazzling with quite surreal cityscape designs.
Emma Stone is given a producer credit, presumably to give her control over the audacious sex scenes. There are laugh out loud moments too.
I generally enjoy "art-house" films as much as Hollywood blockbusters, but Memoria took me beyond my tether. The very opening shot was held so long without movement that I had to check that the Bluray player hadn't frozen. It hadn't! This opening frame set the pace for the whole movie, the camera was deliberately set into a medium wide-shot then held interminably. ( The Jury Prize award given to this film has me baffled, I must be missing something.) There was mystery but I couldn't care enough about the characters as they were barely written. The "revelation" towards the end looked absurd in the context. Avoid unless you suffer from insomnia.
Austin Butler gives a startling performance as Elvis. The teens gasping at an early performance is hilarious, but we also see the racism and segregation that was a dark part in the US of the fifties.
Definitely worth a watch.
Really enjoyed this film. Watched it on 4K bluray . The cinematography is amazing, lovely lighting and camerawork. Great performances and marvellous 60s soundtrack. Enough said. Check it out.
Very enjoyable recording of a live US performance. Terrific musicianship, choreography excellent. Felt like a great night at the theatre, most welcome in these lockdown times. All Byrne's greatest songs are in there too.
This film is great fun right from the start. An enjoyable action movie with some genuinely funny moments. Recommended. My favourite Marvel film to date.
