I love action films of the 80s and 90s. I have wasted many hours watching Segal, Stallone, Snipes et al. However, I had never seen a film where Chuck Norris was the sole hero of a movie.
I wish I hadn't bothered, after picking this, which was supposed to be one of his better movies. There are a few fight scenes placed together with random acts of gurella terrorism. There is no plot to speak of without even bothering to include a basic three act structure. It ends up feeling like someone's random youtube mashup video trying to chop stuff into a coherent film.
You want to like Max played by Norris but in efforts to make him a cool lone wolf he comes off as a cold hearted, apathetic loner. Maybe this was the intention to make him a force of nature but in the end his acts of random violence seem to solve very little, if anything.
What we end up with is astonishingly a very boring action film with an interesting premise, a lot of noise but nothing of interest. There are better films out there like Red Dawn that would be much more rewarding viewing.
This was an interesting concept.
Night of the living dead but redone as an animated movie that would have a story budget only limited by the creators imagination.
So what a shame it is almost a shot for shot copy of the original. There was promotion that new scenes were included. What they don't mention is that was really just a more graphic illustration of a couple of characters deaths and an illustration to anothers monologue.
The original is still the best and the 1990s remake a respectable inclusion into the franchise but this just feels like a cash in.
Watching the special features this feels bad to type as the film makers seem like genuine fans and they are proud of what they achieved.
So if you are a fan already and are curious please check it out, just be prepared to be disappointed.
The film has been maligned on twitter as a horrible parody of what a superhero film should be.
However, based on recent entries such as Eternals and Thor Love and Thunder this isn't bad. Just cheesy and decidedly average. Matt Smith hams it up and Jared Harris is wasted but nothing about this is terrible.
Jared Leto doesn't do the annoying celebrity thing of keeping his face always on show by vamping up fairly reguarly. He also takes a fairly one dimensional comic character and makes him likeable.
In short the bar was set low with the source material and achieves its objective of a fun film.
