The acting was good but any psychological depth is beyond me on this one. The married couple presented as morose and crestfallen and to have slid into a life of dull routine without any levity. I suspect they may have retired too early from their working lives and being without children, had lost their raison d'être. If they had had a more fulfilling lifestyle, I doubt the husband would have been hankering after a lost love in his distant past or the wife questioning and pursuing his wish to do so. The husband was very irritating and being so introspective about his past, was alianating his wife's affection. The movie was very slow and I did not like the inconclusive ending as it gave no indication of how the relationship would fare after the party. I should have liked to see the wife up sticks, find a more meaningful life and leave her husband to wallow.
Just started watching it under recommendation. It's a black comedy/drama and not what the Americans generally classify as just a 'drama'. Watched first episode which appeared okay, second episode a bit more attention holding, third episode - hooked! Gonna buy the box series.
A mesmerising performance from AP with strong performances from Chris O'Donnell (whatever happened to his film career)? and a very young Philip Seymour Hoffman. First seen twenty-four years ago. It's aged well (apart from the motor cars) and didn't disappoint this time around.
What a load of boring and depressing drivel plus a lot of hammy acting. I watched it all the way through hoping that it would change from the boring trivia I was watching. Unfortunately it didn't. Fancy Christophwr Eccleston signing up for this rubbish. One of the worst things I have watched.
An excellently directed movie from Barry Levinson starring the ever illustrious Al Pacino. I doubt anybody else could have portrayed the aging actor, Simon Axler, with such insight as AP. He is in every scene and arouses a plethora of emotions. The female lead, Kyra Sedgwick, goes hand in glove with AP to make this a very watchable movie. It has an unusual storyline and an excellent screenplay. I'de class this movie as a drama/comedy as opposed to drama as there are some very funny moments in it. It brought the movie, Birdman, to mind but in my opinion, far superior and without all the irritating expletives.
Very disappointed with this movie. Very few of the characters rang true. I know the main lead was supposed to be autistic but I found it very difficult to summon up any sympathy for this character. I did not like the jumpy acting style of his mother. The relentless and overpowering soundtrack was extremely irritating making it difficult at times to understand the what was being said. Although, towards the end of the movie, I'de lost interest anyway.
Not usually my movie genre but watched on recommendation. Glad I did. Jake Gyllenhaal becomes Louis Bloom (the main character), giving a very noteworthy performance as a morally vacuous man cashing in on the blood thirsty deaths of his fellow human beings. JG obviously lost a lot of weight for this role thus enhancing his features as the sinister character he is. Very good.
A cautionary tale of a young teenager on the cusp of womanhood, destroyed by the extreme faith of her elders. A slow movie, beautifully acted in a natural way by the main character. Quiet but good viewing.
If it's allegorical, I didn't get it. If it isn't, the surrealism of the piece didn't bode well for easy understanding of the characters or make for good cinema. The child came across as a quiet monster, no empathy therefore could be allotted to him. The bedroom scenes betwixt the child and adults was also very risqué. Charles Aznavour had a cameo in it. Most odd
Well what a disappointment. The original La Cage aux Folles was absolutely hilarious. This one is not. It's an extremely run of the mill comedy(?) with nothing original about it. The changing scenes don't flow and reminded me of very early cinema screenings back in the twenties. A waste of time.
This movie was not as I expected it to be. I fell asleep twice watching it but persevered to the end in the hope that it might live up to some sort of expectation. It didn't. Sir Ian Mckellan overdid the old man act and the two actors in supporting roles (housekeeper and son) were not believable. A waste of time. One star given for the shots of the lovely English countryside.
A meloncholy and difficult film to watch. It certainly challenges the grey matter in trying to understand the dynamics of the relationships involved. First part initially slow but intrigue builds without a predictable outcome. Wonderful acting from the whole cast. Every subtitle carefully read. This is tantamount in trying to decipher what is really going on in the minds of the various characters.
I thought I had ordered the Dark Knight movie with Heath Ledger in it. Wrong! I don't usually enjoy this film genre. I became bored with this one but have given it three stars for effort.
Slow paced and lovely to watch. Consummate and natural acting by all of the family members. Even the little camel did well! Enjoyed very much.
I was really looking forward to this movie but have no charitable words for it. It came across as stylised rubbish, empty and unfunny. I gave up half way thru. Ho hum!
