Falstaff: Chimes at Midnight

Methinks the words are held most dear but distorted sound did blight the ear!!

(Edit) 12/10/2015

It might be a restored version but I found the sound distorted in places and impeded the understanding of the shakespearian dialogue. I gave up well before it finished. The acting was good enough but only one star due to sound quality (or not, as the case may be)!

It's All Gone Pete Tong

It's All Wrong Pete Tong

(Edit) 12/10/2015

It was good for what it was but what it was, I didn't like! Checked the supposed real character (DJ Frankie Wilde) out on the Internet - he appears not to actually exist!

Robot and Frank

Missed the button!

(Edit) 23/08/2015

This one did not quite hit the button with me. The robot looked like a person inside robotic attire, every now and then losing his staccato movements. I also found the setting quite gloomy. The story line was okay but I think others would possibly enjoy this movie more than myself.

Warm Bodies

An incredulous movie

(Edit) 20/08/2015

.........but who would expect a movie about Zombies to be otherwise! Surprisingly watchable with good acting. It just goes to prove that love can conquer all!

Last Vegas

One star only for this not very good movie

(Edit) 18/08/2015

If I did not know better, I would have thought the stars had participated in this movie because they needed the money. With their immense acting ability, whoever talked them into doing this one must have had immense powers of persuasion. It's crass, shallow and has minimal entertainment value

The Double

A waste of subscription money

(Edit) 13/08/2015

I can't think why I hired this one. Stupid, dull and boring. . Half an hour of it was too much. Sorry. No stars

Nebraska

Sit back and enjoy

(Edit) 31/07/2015

An unglamorous movie with an unrushed narrative, this movie is a joy to watch. It depicts yearning and regret but is interspersed with soft humour. The black and white presentation promotes its nostalgic tone. The acting throughout from all the cast and the direction is faultless. June Squibb, in her eighties, is unmissable. Thoroughly recommended.

The Skeleton Twins

A very grown up film

(Edit) 30/07/2015

An engaging mix of black and white, drama and comedy with the three main actors portraying totally believable characters. The film becomes emotionally charged at times but is interspersed with some very comical moments. The acting is superb and I did not notice one 'okay' emitting forth from any of the characters. This depicts a well crafted script as most American movies are peppered with this adjective and is something I find very irritating. The film starts on a very serious 'note' but stay with it and you'll reap the reward of having witnessed an excellent movie.

Danny Collins

A cut above the average

(Edit) 28/07/2015

A superb movie from director, Dan Fogelman. Al Pacino never disappoints and is mesmerising as the lead character. The acting from all the cast is tip top but not over the top as is usual with many American actors. It deals with all human emotions and is one of the best American movies I have seen. I saw it at the cinema. It is so good, I have put it on my list to hire when it's released on DVD - something I never usually do! Thoroughly recommended - Al Pacino fans will adore this Oscar worthy film.

The Four Times

This review contains an animal spoiler

(Edit) 27/07/2015

Apart from finding the hacking cough of the old goat herder irritating, I was really enjoying this film until the unnecessary death of a baby goat. Although he would have lost a very small part of the film, the cameraman could easily have saved this animal from the elements. I was disgusted and could watch no more of the film

Whiplash

Bang on in a good way

(Edit) 18/07/2015

Him of the long hard stare (Miles Teller) and him of the vicious verbals (J K Simmons) give excellent performances as drummer and instructor in this fast paced movie. Not a particularly ardent jazz enthusiast myself but could appreciate the excellent drumming sequences. These were achieved without a noticeable join as don't think 'skins' are one of Miles' special abilities. The behaviour of the instructor defies belief in this day and age when the decrying of physical and verbal abuse is not accepted in civilised society in a classroom/academy environment. I guess this movie is allowed licence to get away with it or we wouldn't have a movie!

Blue Jasmine

One star for effort

(Edit) 13/07/2015

In am not usually a Woody Allen fan but swayed to hire this movie by some really excellent reviews. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it. I found the characters abrasive, unlikeable and unreal. I don't think falling asleep twice during transmission helped but this was the magnetic strength for me of this film!

Enough Said

Nice one

(Edit) 09/07/2015

James Gandolfini changes tact from his usual macho roles in this one. He is a delight to watch and proves what a sad loss to the movie industry he was. Never twee, but a charming tale around the dynamics of two mature adults falling in love again after each having a failed marriage. The script is very natural (I suspect some ad libbing in places) and the acting faultless.

A Royal Affair

Good while it lasted

(Edit) 26/06/2015

Sumptuous settings, easy on the eye and a story from history I was not fully aware of. I felt some sympathy for the very young queen and the trauma she experienced during her very young and short life. Not so her physician who, apart from the queen, appears to have behaved quite irrevantly towards everybody around him. Mikkelsen Boe Folsgaard is excellent as the insane king. Mads Mikkelson as the physician is also very good. (Note reviewer PV above is incorrect about the Danish actors being unknown. Mads Mikkelson is one of Denmark's best exports, having a string of awards to his name including a 2014 Oscar for The Hunt). I found the movie held my attention, was very impressed with how the final scenes were presented but for all that, will probably soon forget about it.

One Chance

Not so good

(Edit) 20/06/2015

I found this movie about BGT winner Paul Potts disappointing. Although it's a true story, it presented as contrived and fictionalised. James Corden looked out of place as the subject matter and didnt appear to be comfortable with lip syncing operatic songs. I expected more.
