Having read the poor reviews of this movie, I was a little apprehensive as I sat down to watch it. However, I shouldn't have worried.
If you're looking for gore then you've picked the wrong film, but if you're looking for a sensitive insight into the mind of the main character, then this is for you.
As in "Joker" (Part 1), Joaquin Phoenix is excellent - truly giving his all in his sensitive portrayal of a man who has had his fare share of knocks in life.
Younger viewers of this film will probably not recognise or appreciate the music which is interspersed throughout tis movie, but I thought that it blended beautifully with the story as we moved from love and hope to desperation and tragedy.
I have given this a 4/5 as I think that the way in which the two lovers separated could have been improved, but, all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey through the film.
I watched this film in the privacy of my home - away from hype-driven cinema goers. The first 30 minutes looked promising and then - oh dear - it descended into the most cliched farce that I have ever seen. The message simply seemed to be that boys are bad and girls are good - forcing this opinion on young ladies of an impressionable age is not big and certainly not clever (and I am a woman myself). I totally lost interest mid way through this movie.....and the end credits where they were basically advertising all of the rare Barbies that had ever been on sale was simply cringeworthy. Utter dross but, no doubt, Mattel will be working on a sequel as we speak (and counting up the doll sale dollars from newly found Barbie converts).....YIKES.
Everything about this picture is pure mastery. Shot in black and white, it draws the viewer into a Victorian world where a humble man is scorned and shamefully treated. Every character is well cast and the acting is beyond compare. My favourite film of all time. BRAVO!
This movie wouldn't have been *too* bad if every sentence uttered did not include an expletive! Why do writers and producers think that a film will be appealing to the young, hip and trendy generation if and only if there is excessive use of *really* foul language? Seeing accomplished actors speak such needless filth was cringe-worthy!
What a load of rubbish! I only could tolerate this foul mouthed attempt at comedy for 15 minutes. It was absolutely painful to witness established actors delivering an embarrassingly awful script. It's no wonder Hugh Grant didn't get involved.
