I enjoyed this a lot. It's a layered and slow burner of a film but boy, does it deliver. Kate Winslet is a total triumph; in fact all the players are. If you want something different from the usual second world war fair, a film that's a bit more thoughtful, erudite try this and then perhaps try the book of the same name that it was inspired by. Good stuff!
I'd heard about this from a Facebook film group I'm in so was intrigued. It has a indy film feel and plays like an odd mash up of Ghost World and Napoleon Dynamite. With extra perv. I like odd and weird so I did enjoy it, especially the musical score but damn it is bizarre and does push it for sure. If it's your thing and you want a change from beautiful perfect bodies and shiny polished Hollywood film fare then give it a try. It is certainly worth a look but if odd films aren't your thing don't be surprised if you finish it either confused, hating it or both.
I first watched this when it was first shown on the tv back in the 90s. I loved it then and I still love it now rewatching all this years later. It was wonderfully shot and the music always matches up to empathise the visuals further. It takes a few episodes to fully warm up but once it gets going and we move towards teenager Indy you become fully invested. You will also spend a good part of the time spotting various stars and seeing what they did before they became big movie stars later on down the line. This is fab viewing if you are or even if you aren't an Indiana Jones fan. Good old fashioned adventure screen fare!
I do like a bit of Jean Reno and to see him in this role as almost an ageing Leon was a joy. It's not an all action shoot out of a movie but stick with it and all will be revealed. An enjoyable slow burner of a film.
