The acting is appalling and the characters' behaviours are cringingly outdated (as you might expect) but also irritatingly implausible with long scenes of people just gazing vacantly into space with their mouths open. If you make it to the very end of the film the special effects are admittedly quite good, but I suspect Spielberg blew the entire budget on these, as the rest is like watching paint dry! The ending itself left me cold, thinking "keh...is that it?!!" I couldn't remember if I had seen it before, now I know why...there wasn't actually anything much worth remembering!
I knew nothing of the Saun of the Dead connection etc (it was a long forgotten recommendation) and just took this film at face value. I found it very whacky funny and British...and that was even before the weird zombie bits! Yes lots of swearing and juvenile blokey sardonic humour, but strangely poignant too. I laughed a lot, although my husband didn't like it so much. I especially loved the soundtracks which helped get me in tune with the main characters euphoric/ manic mood!
Set in Paris, a gently funny and charming film which contrasts the Woody Allen type character's love of Paris, culture and the past with his fiancée's shallowness and love of the present, using his sudden ability for time travel to make the point. It's an obvious plot line but beautifully done, with Paris portrayed at it's most romantic!
