I loved this film when I saw it first. Science fiction is so often presented as happening to Americans and to people we can't relate to at all. This feels like it's happening in the world I exist in and that's why it has some shock value for me. Racists are not going to enjoy it. The characters are kids gone wrong but when put into this situation they turn out better than one might think. This is the side of British society that some people would like to pretend didn't exist and like to continuously put down when it is given any attention but it does have it's heroes.
I wouldn't get this film if you're impatient. It kept me guessing till quite close to the end so that I had plenty of time to make up theories and try to understand the main character.
Other reviews give the story away. I like it because it's not always the most apparently nice people who will save your life or help you out or otherwise treat you decently. Possibly a bit long. I obviously also like watching a film about another country because it lets me escape mentally and this film worked in that way for me.
