Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough

A Wonder Captured Beautifully

(Edit) 09/06/2018

It's a BBC production, that lets you know the cinematography is going to be first class and it doesn't disappoint at all plus the legendary narrator himself, god of all nature documentaries, David is top notch once again.

This series focusses heavily on the damage to the barrier reef and the future it faces, it's sad to see but also shows conservation efforts underway. That aside, the footage and wildlife captured and their struggles is simply incredible, these series always have great story telling pace and variety, you never get bored. As with all these shows, get it on Blu Ray, the barrier reef is stunning.

The Private Life of Plants

Technically this should be boring

(Edit) 09/06/2018

I laughed at the world of plants when I first read it, I'm used to fast paced chase scenes, huge migrations, animals with incredible skills, camouflage etc so plants, green food for herbivores, I wasn't sure what to expect.

All I can say is plants are equally as fascinating as animals, This show charts their adaptability, the lures they use for food and some plants are like alien species with an unnerving and unexpected sense of intelligence from them. In terms of footage as this is an older documentary the quality isn't on par with the recent wildlife documentaries which is obvious but they do a great job of captivating the viewer. Jam packed with information, I enjoyed it a lot.

Two Doors Down: Series 2

Masterful Awkward Comedy

(Edit) 05/06/2018

A Scottish gem, largely unknown strangely. Not many people had heard of Two Doors Down until the Hogmanay Special in 2017. A group of neighbours, the normal and plain, down to earth family take centre stage coming to terms with a gay son and his boyfriend. Their close neighbours are a nice but blow hard show off guy always unknowingly belittling his neighbours lifestyle and his alcoholic wife who thinks she's a wag and takes everything too far, blended with the hypochondriac, negative neighbour that leeches off everyone for free food and drink and she has a pregnant daughter.

It masters awkward comedy, the second series is as good as the first, definitely worth a watch.

Two Doors Down: Series 3

Make or Break

(Edit) 04/06/2018

After a solid 2 series, Two Doors Down faces the common comedy trap of trying to work out who the characters really are and keep them on track or develop them more. Like the Royle Family, Scot Squad etc the characters have their own charms and the producers become aware of what the audience like about them and then commit the crime of exaggerating the characters perceived funny aspects and taking them too far. Originally they could be real people, then in the end they become extreme caricatures of the character they originally were and the show dies becoming too farcical.

Most of the episodes were good, the series finale with Grado appearing was good but the final scene with Cathy taking a mini digger to demolish a porch out of jealousy was lame. I liked it, but worry that this may be the last good series before a 4th season comes with highly implausible scenarios. Definately watch series 1 and 2, 3 is good but feel they are running out of rational excuses to get all the characters together to make a show up and if they get a 4th it'll be interesting to see if they can keep it on track.

Spy in the Wild: Series 1

Very Different

(Edit) 31/05/2018

This was never meant to be an average wildlife documentary, the whole project was like an espionage mission into the wild, to trick animals into being off guard while a very expensive robot invades their territory and sits right beside them. In honesty, this made the show 10 times better as they put the viewer right into the thick of it. You can see the curiosity of the animals and most were able to tell it was not real, but not worried enough to escape it. The chimpanzees can be seen attacking it with rocks and sticks and generally being freaked by the strange animal in the tree with cameras for eyes. They cover a whole range of animals across the globe, rainforests, desert, sea, air. It's a spectacular achievement for the crew and definitely worth a watch even if you're not an addict of wildlife films.

Fred Dibnah's: Building of Britain

Classic Dibnah Enjoyment

(Edit) 30/05/2018

Fred Dibnah has always been great to watch for me, I love his enthusiasm and listening to him is like peering through a window to the old times where life was a lot harder but an honest graft was what kept families eating and living. In this series he takes a trip across Britain and takes you back to times long before Fred were't lad, and it's simply fascinating what was achieved prior to computers and modern technology. It should be everyone's duty to learn what it took to make Britain, very good series across 6 episodes.

Guy Martin: Last Flight of the Vulcan Bomber

Can't get enough Guy Martin

(Edit) 30/05/2018

Guy is such an honest and enthusiastic presenter, like an excited kid at times when it comes to engineering. If you like him or not, as long as you have an interest in the Vulcan bomber this is fantastic. What a machine, the howl of the engines is worth watching this alone and Guy gets to help maintain and explore every facet of the Vulcan prior to it's final flight. Slightly sad but outstanding TV.

Kong: Skull Island

Beautiful but Boring

(Edit) 30/05/2018

Whilst the visuals are incredible, it takes more than visuals to make a good film. I just felt like it was a demonstration of CGI with little effort put into a compelling plot.

Tom and Jerry Classic Collection: Vol.2

Hooked

(Edit) 30/05/2018

I haven't seen a Tom & Jerry in decades, to find the whole collection on here was a suprise and I blitzed through them all quickly as they are very short. Not much else I can add, if you haven't seen one before, it may be considered too harmful to special little kids wrapped in cotton wool as it features bombs, weapons, traps, violence, however back when I watched it, it was a CARTOON, which has no relevance to real life and it didn't try to shock, it was cleverly created with plots that are very funny. If you know what Tom & Jerry is, you know what to expect. Great way to see them all and relive childhood before things had to be 'safe and harmless'.

My Scientology Movie

Not Louis Best, but Interesting nonetheless

(Edit) 30/05/2018

I normally relish every minute of a Louis documentary but this one wasn't as good, kind of boring. Granted it's a great way to learn about the wackiness of scientology as I didn't know much prior to watching it but that novelty wears thin and it's mostly about him and the ex member who gets quite weird with him at times. Probably not worth watching unless you are interested in the subject matter which is a strange thing to say as you can watch documentaries on anything with Louis and they're normally highly entertaining and eye opening.
