Johnny Depp's middle aged professor has a mid life health crisis, gets a bit drunk, smokes some dope and all his students want to sleep with him. He also says some remarkably unprofound things about life and mortality that even a 13 year old might find trite. Unbelievable twaddle. Avoid.
Hadn't seen this in years and enjoyed it thoroughly - it's not perfect, but it predated Alien, Star Wars, Red Dwarf, etc and left its mark on them all. Think 2001 on a budget, but much funnier...
The Bluray is worth getting for the documentary feature on the making of the film - how it went from being an ambitious student project to a cult cinema release is a fascinating history in itself.
Was looking forward to this as an early sci fi work from George Lucas. I wasn't expecting a blockbuster and it was interesting for a while, but soon got very tedious with the jarring inclusion of digital additions that were clearly outside the original films budget and vision. Why does George Lucas insist on tinkering with his past work like this? I don't know if an original cut is available, but if it is, avoid this at all costs and try to get hold of a copy of the original.
Wouldn't recommend to anybody but sci fi obsessives and completists.
