One or two of the minor characters (the daughter, mainly) are poorly realised but the kids and the dogs and the two leads play their parts superbly. It is a sad story but with a bit of humour. Very credible and quite unpredictable. The music is nice, not intrusive, and the film is snappily edited. A self-indulgent director might have padded this out to two hours and ruined it.
Yet another serious film mindlessly categorised as 'comedy' just because it includes a little humour.
With its fair share of melodrama, this sometimes feels like "Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf". The film explores the paranoia that arises when you don't know who is watching and who is listening and who is out to get you, when anything you say could potentially be against the law - a tactic used by despots throughout the world, even in 'civilised' countries.
This is indescribably awful, so what more can I say? It has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Shallow and unfunny.
The film is fine but the DVD print I received was quite abysmal. The video quality is worse than early VHS and the audio is distorted.
See the big 'eye' watermark on the poster? That remains visible throughout, except during transitions between scenes, so all the time you're staring into someone else's giant eye. (Sometimes the eye is closed, which provides momentary respite from a most discomfiting experience.) Mind you, the quality of the nature images is so poor you might be glad for the distraction.
