Saw this 20 - 25 years ago and it is better than i remember it. Very vivid scenes, nearly perfectly timed to wring maximum tension even when you know what's coming. Impressive how Losey manipulates your emotions as well as the conniving Bogarde manipulates Fox - making you feel sympathy for Fox but then nudging your allegiance back to Bogarde by having his "betters" try to put him in his place.
I see where the suggestion of a homosexual subtext is coming from but it doesn't seem that plausible or add much complexity to the film.
