This is a total travesty for lovers of the Anne of Green Gables books. Rather than take the utterly beguiling stories and turn them into an equally charming  series, the producers have fiddled around with the stories and produced such a woke programme it’s hilarious. These gentle, funny stores are now burdened by social messages that would have played no part of life on Prince Edward Island in the late 1800s. They leave no  stone unturned - the mistreatment of indigenous Canadians, women’s rights, colour controversy, a  maid who can only lip read. The list goes on and on. On top of that Amybeth McNulty plays Anne as immensely homely, which was never my image of Anne Shirley ( worth watching Megan Follows play her wonderfully in the earlier Anne of Green Gables ). I persevered until the end in the hope that it would get better but unfortunately it didn’t.
