Welcome to GB's film reviews page. GB has written 5 reviews and rated 8 films.
If you're a huge fan of this franchise then my review won't alter your opinion that this is a masterpiece. If however, like me, you sit on the fringe and have enjoyed Fast 5 or Hobbs and Shaw then you'll probably sit in disbelief about just how stupid this film is.
The stunts have always been ridiculous, but this constant need to "out do" the last film means that stupidity has replaced any semblance of realism. There has also been a (very bad in my opinion) press towards CGI replacing real cars due to the extreme nonsense of the physics. This lean towards it means that the main driver (no pun intended) for watching the movie has become a completely and obviously fake environment. It renders driving scenes risk free and many scenes show actors in studios against green screen. One scene involving Diesel swinging his car on a pendulum from a destroyed bridge (whilst he "steers" whilst swinging) just made me wanna smash the TV with a sledgehammer.
Plot wise it's it's complete mess. I don't suppose we are expecting Citizen Kane levels of depth in a FF movie but this makes FF5 look like Oscar bait.
The other big problem is Diesel who is simply a very very bad actor. He has no screen presence anymore and simply wanders from scene to scene looking like he's constipated. The whole crowbarring in of conversations about "family" are just so clichéd these days they literally make you groan when you hear them. I read an interview where Diesel talked about how fans love the "mythology" of FF movies which tells you how far up his own backside he is. Mythology? Come on Vin you must be the only one using that word in relation to FF movies.
The introduction of Cena does not bring the same level of presence that Dwayne Johnson or Jason Statham did in earlier movies. Charlize Theron just looks embarrassed, and Helen Mirren as an "Octogenarian Drift Driver" is about as believable as a Roswell alien reading the news.
Absolute pile of tosh!
I have to agree with the majority of reviews, this is not even deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as the Arnie original. When will filmmakers learn that CGI blood and gore is about as realistic as tomato ketchup on a bandage. I honestly can not believe how all round awful this was, it's a tragedy of epic proportions. It's about as scary as Brexit, but slightly funnier ! The final scene pretty much sums up the whole movie, just painful !
I have to say that I wondered if it was just me who watched this film and felt very disappointed. However the reviews seem to mirror many of my thoughts. I find this more and more with Marvel movies, as I generally see them a few months after their cinema release on Blu Ray. Often they are reviewed by critics as 4 and 5 star movies, and I'm almost always disappointed. They are never "bad films" from Marvel, they are just more of the same EVERY TIME. Irrespective of powers, they always seem to have a showdown that involves 2 blokes beating each other up. Personally I find this market is completely over saturated and it's getting tired. We get a superheroes film 4 times a year, it's just becoming totally boring. As they make a ton of money I can't see them going anywhere anytime soon. Personally I'll keep watching at home as I have no desire to pay a lot of money to essentially watch a CGI fight fest
Fair play to the review above that seems to take it somewhat seriously ? I however cannot take this seriously, because whilst I rented it and expected little, I actually think this is the worst film I have ever seen. Shocking acting, "direlogue" beyond belief, and just plain hilarious sets and locations ! Can't afford a mock concentration camp ? Well let's film down the local bin yard ! Let's use a wide aperture so the background is completely out of focus preventing the reveal of some 2018 landscape. I could go on, but you get the point. The "Epilogue" sees several characters meet some "40 years later" get they look EXACTLY the same except for some clothing changes ? Cheap and nasty in every sense, just awful !!
It's become obvious to anyone except the "lads" of "geezerville" that Guy Ritchie shot his bolt with his first 2 films. Lock Stock and Snatch were fine, genre rousing British gangster movies. Sadly, his output since can be best described a "sporadic" at best. This film is without a doubt his worst misguided attempt. He tries to bring something new to the "Arthurian Legend" and ends up with a confusing mish mash of geezers, fantasy, legends and CGI overloads that frankly you sit wondering who approved this stuff ? Even if you suspend your disbelief long enough it's still a dreadful movie. Charlie Hunham, Aidan GIllen and Jude Law are usually dependable actors, but here they flounder with dreadful screenwriting and a soundtrack that can't decide whether it's rock music or classical. A word of warning - Any King Arthur film that starts with 200ft elephants on screen in the first minute tells you all you need to know about the next 2 hours. I will save you my pain and advise you to give up at this point and go and watch some paint dry, it will undoubtedly be more enjoyable than this drivel !
