I was really looking forward to this film with two excellent actors, and about a palaeontologist I knew, through the novel Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier.
I was disappointed because Kate Winslet's part is mostly silent, but when she does speak she mumbles, so you don't hear what she says.
The sex felt voyeuristic ,and the ending of the film ambiguous, and unsatisfying. The film could have paid SOME attention to the significance of her work in relation to Darwin.
I found the motivation for making this film questionable.
I had no particular expectations of this film, but was disappointed. I could see the intention was to show conflict between locals and second-homers, but I found it hard to tell the characters apart, and it just wasn't convincing. Sorry!
Some beautiful filming of nature.
But expressionless acting by main character - whose hair remained exactly the same and his face exactly as clean after many months of war and trekking among dangers - quite unbelievable! Also very confusing ending - actual homecoming not filmed, then his funeral...
I'm sure this young director will improve his skills! But why was it highly acclaimed?
