Terrific actors and atmosphere squandered. Just got sillier and sillier, yet somehow also predictable in the end.
Spall is much better as Lowry than he was at being Turner a few years ago. You could really feel his frustration at being stymied by his selfish, needy and vulnerable mother. Redgrave rose to the occasion: one of her masterful portrayals. Nothing lagged or bored in the film.
It probably would appeal more if you were a teenage girl. Some very good acting but in the end you really didn't care what happened to the characters. Three maybe four stars for direction and acting, but nil for the rather silly (though indeed fast-paced), story line.
Gently amusing, fairly predictable, not as tear-jerking as it intended to be. The characters held our interest, particularly the 'dying' traditional grandmother and the Americanised granddaughter, but also the uncle. A bit slapsticky at times. Enjoyable but not memorable.
