The 'Scooby Doo' live films are scraping the barrel here (and I must say I thought the last one was not good). Vaguley amusing for a 12 year old, quite funny for an 8 year old. Wasted on most I suspect
I don't remember ordering this and it might have been sent out by mistake. From the sets, through o the cast - mainly speaking a poorly attempted effort in late 19th century London English. Made it about 20 minutes through impossibly modern US dialogue (with an occasional attempt at a cockney colloquialism. I then decided that life was short enough.
Let it be a warning.
Despite a stellar cast (I can only assume that Spall, Thompson and Brosnan needed some pocket money for their summer holidays) this neither held my attention or amused) - even if there were a few laughs. There are better ways to spend an evening (and leaving the television off would be a good start).
this is utter and total drivel - poor acting, poor plot, a poor conclusion
Go back to the 1999 (well about) with Gleason and Weiss. OK it is a B movie - but has a certain appeal and is soooo much more inventive and amusing as this pile of alsatian Turd (I jest you not).
So Cruise becomes the 'love interest' (sorry Weiss was far more appealing - and considerably more likeable and amusing). The leading (?) actress - well we all wondered whether she was simply an import who had not worked hard enough on accent - but apparently, she is British (you see we too can export crap actors to the US).
It fails on so many levels. The spiders don't have ha;f the creep of the scrabs (in the Leason/Weiss film). There is no imagination at all - and I include the introduction of Doctor Jekyll in that! Details are flimsy (really - that aircraft was pressurised and would not survive penetration - pull the other one or at least inform the US military (they need to know). Got to be England - the pint glass have handles :-)
Too much to write but to much time to waste before a better film. We tried this glasses of wine in hand and the only value was in te comments of the (increasingly sloshed) viewers.
Avoid it!
But it Cruise has ambition and there was a sequel set up at the end.
A (very) low budget piss-take on Shaun of the Dead. It is not without its charms, but best enjoyed after an evening out with a glass of wine in your hand.
An extended tale (tail?) of a New York doctor “banished” to Alaska (although it was mainly filmed in Washington State I believe) to repay his college debts. He suffers massive culture shock (no bagels) as he comes across a room ange of bizarre, and often endearing characters, as well as a life he never imagined in his worst nightmares - from the ex astronaut magnate through the local DJ by way of a hermit cordon bleu chef. His coming to terms with his new life fascinating. Well written and pretty consistent until (imho) the last series, it is well worth watching.
It has aged well. I rented the first disk as my collection of DVDs is missing it!
Boardwalk empire (I am only two episodes in) provides an interesting view of “the slippery slope” - “honest” graft that goes bad with the participants being dragged deeper and deeper into the mire. Fine performances, wonderful sets and (CGI generated) background. Highly recommended - so far.
