Anguish

Boring and dull

(Edit) 14/01/2019

Boring and dull! Nothing much happens. Got an extra star for not following the usual religious path that films of this ilk usually go down, but could still not recommend. Best part happens in the first couple of minutes.

Colony: Series 2

Highly Recommended!

(Edit) 18/12/2018

Series 2 picks up directly from the 1st series and carries on the exceptionally high quality seen in the first series with great acting, a believable story, an excellent script and a group of characters that you are rooting for. The fact that even the people you perceive as baddies you are secretly rooting for as well, just shows the many levels and twists and turns that the series has. At points, it is quite bleak however the focus remains on the family unit and doing what you have to to survive, but not in an evil, sadistic way like The Walking Dead has gone in recent series. I would recommend Colony completely, it is one of the best series I've seen in recent years. I'm hoping it gets a proper ending in Series 3 now that it has been cancelled but knowing American syndicates, I doubt it. Still, I@m looking forward to seeing what the 3rd series holds.

Night of the Living Deb

Cheap but inventive

(Edit) 10/12/2018

What a surprise this film was! Yes, some of the acting is dodgy and the special effects at times were ropy. However the script was surprisingly funny, laugh out loud at times, and every time we picked up on a potential plot hole, a few minutes later it would be explained in a very logical way. So, what starts as a cheap rip-off of other Zombie films actually turns into a decent, funny and well thought out film that we thoroughly enjoyed. If you like Zombie films of the 'Zombieland' ilk, you should like this as well.

Sing Street

Ridiculous!

(Edit) 08/10/2018

Complete and utter ridiculous film fantasy... but who cares, that is what films are supposed to be like, we loved it!

The Big Short

Absorbing and Interesting

(Edit) 16/08/2018

If you are interested in 'issues' and about learning how things have happened, this film is for you. Yes, it can be confusing and you do need to concentrate however it is uterly absorbing, entertaining but most importantly it shows exactly what caused the economic crisis and who was to blame. The performances are excellent and you really root for the main characters despite them betting on failure. A wonderful film, that most people will enjoy.

Lady Bird

Alright, not sure why the hype

(Edit) 26/07/2018

Like the previous reviewer, it's a well-acted, O.K film that didn't move me in any way.

Very light story where not much actually happens, very subdued.

Had a lot of buzz and rave reviews but I still cannot put my finger on why.

Nowhere near as good as other films of its ilk, like Whip It!

Enjoyable enough but very light and subdued.

The Golden Dream

Essential viewing

(Edit) 20/07/2018

Gritty and realistic story of a group of teenagers trying to make it into America in the hope of escaping their poverty striken lives in Guatamala to a world of delights. This doesn't shy away from what is actually happening in the real world today and makes for an interesting, if very downbeat story. Essential viewing for anyone interested in the world around them and the hopes and dreams of a better life despite the troubles and hardships to get there.

Finding Vivian Maier

Extremely interesting

(Edit) 18/07/2018

Got this film due to a good review in Empire magazine. Very interesting film that builds from one person making a find and spreading out from there. The photographs that Vivian Maier took really are quite beautiful, showing street life in all it's forms. She makes for a fascinating character despite her foibles. If you enjoyed Searching for Sugarman you'll love this film as it has many parallels to that highly rated film. The main presenter guiding us through the story shows a genuine curiosity that sweeps you up and takes you along with the ride and is the driving force in uncovering the story behind the over 100,000 photos that were taken. Would recommend this film and at only 84 minutes long, doesn't feel like it has overstayed it's welcome.

The Second Mother

A story with real depth

(Edit) 05/07/2018

What a wonderful little (in the sense of its setting), subtle film. Set in Sao Paulo, Brazil (of which you don't get to see very much at all) this film is a little gem. Great acting, a genuinely interesting story that explores the way in which different classes interlink during their day to day lives. It does make you think about how people living in servitude are treated, however well looked after they are. There are some wonderful moments scattered throughout the film which will bring a smile to your face and is ultimately an uplifting film. Recommended (Portuguese with English subtitles).

Red Army

Interesting

(Edit) 13/06/2018

We don't like Ice Hockey, let's get that out of the way first. It is not a sport I enjoy watching and never will. However this film is an interesting insight into how sport was used to prop up a political ideal. It offers an insight behind the iron curtain and the very strict regime that the players had to go through to achieve the countries goals. And when you then see footage of the USSR team playing, wow! It cannot be doubted that the way they played the sport is mesmorising. Even for someone who doesn't like the sport, you can fully appreciate just how good they were, like watching Matthew Le Tissier in the Premier League. Overall, a very interesting film that can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in ice hockey or the old USSR and the cold war. Well worth the 80 minutes running time.

Downsizing

Entertaining

(Edit) 11/06/2018

Very interesting and entertaining film. The concept is a good one that hints at bigger questions but doesn't really look to answer them. The film is about unlikely relationships and the impact of humans on our planet and environment. The film is funny, touching and emotional with some great ideas. It is not really open to a sequel but I wanted to see more of the in film universe after the film had finished.

An accomplished, entertaining and enjoyable film with a great cast and a very interesting concept.

Meru

Interesting with Beautiful Scenery

(Edit) 18/05/2018

A story about 3 people attempting to scale an un-scalable mountain peak. Your enjoyment of this will depend on how well you can relate to the 3 main characters and the lifestyle they have chosen to lead. We found it difficult to really get wrapped in their story as it is not a lifestyle we can truly understand or relate to, which meant we weren't really routing for them. However, the film does offer an interesting story with some of the most amazing scenery you will see captured on film. Ultimately an enjoyable film, but we didn't get emotionally involved or engaged as much as we normally would.

Loving Vincent

Beautiful to watch, story lacking

(Edit) 08/05/2018

Undoubtedly an amazing film to watch in terms of style. It looks stunning, being based on van Goghs painting styles and his works. It's such a shame that there wasn't more time spent on the story or script as nothing much happens at all and the script is extremely light. Ultimately once you are over the shock of the animation style and settle into the film, it becomes rather boring, with no big set pieces, reveals, cliff-hangers or thought provoking moments. As a study of art and an animation style, it is a triumph however as a piece of entertainment, it was actually a little disappointing.

Colony: Series 1

Excellent, well thought out Sci-Fi

(Edit) 14/03/2018

Pleasantly surprised by this series. Cannot remember why we added it to our list but so glad we did. Nothing is spoon fed to you and going in blind is an excellent way to watch. Nothing is really shown and you have to piece together what is happening yourself, especially during the pilot episode. But it is a well thought out, intriguing and interesting show. It is firmly based around the main family but also the politics of the Colony, which you gradually learn more about as the series progresses. It doesn't give you a history lesson as to how everything came about and is not full of special effects and big explosions (though there are some). It is about the family unit, the wider society and doing what it takes to survive. A very good series and I'm looking forward to watching the second one soon to try and find out more answers to what actually is going on and the motivations behind everything. Highly recommended.

Beauty and the Beast

Why remake?

(Edit) 22/01/2018

Very disappointing indeed. Offered nothing new from the original animated film and was largely inferior. Emma Thompson as Mrs Potts was truly awful casting, sneaking into Dick van Dyke accent territory most of the time. The songs were not a patch on the original either, mostly ruined with sub-par performances. Don't bother with this, watch the original instead, a much more enjoyable and accomplished film.
