Better than we expected. The start appeared to be cliched - but the drama really took off with David's revelation. A good telling of senior romance without the cosy feelgood factor. Excellent acting by Alison Steadman. and David Johns.
On reflection this is a slightly better film than 'Captain Philips'. Devoid of suspenseful action scenes, it simply kept a sweating tension throughout. A bit more realistic this drama then, with good performances.
Quite entertaining when we first saw it decades ago. Fascinating views of central London when the traffic was so quiet. It really does look very dated now.
This is quite a well made film which just avoids the usual cliches of British 'feel good' movies. The acting by Bening and Bell is very good. Recommended even if it is a bit predictable.
An interesting film. We are not normally keen on 'gun-toting films' , but this was better than we expected. Yes, there was a morally dubious theme - were they justified at robbing banks and terrifying people to pay off a family debt ? Probably not. The older brother had a fatalistic attitude and just wished to help his younger brother and his family. There were lovely character sketches - the old waitress with the one choice menu etc. The retiring sheriff did have an affectionate rapport with his Mexican colleague. A good ending. We always watch modern American movies with the sub-titles on because............nearly every actor mumbles these days !
Three stars.
There are two reasons for not giving this film a rave review. Surely the couple must have known that it was illegal to live in Virginia as a married mixed race couple ? Did they really think that no-one would betray them ? We also think that the movie was a little overlong, perhaps fifteen minutes or so ? Apart from that it was an excellent movie - intelligent, well acted and well worth seeing.
