Colony in Space is a bleak and anxiety riven addition to the Whovian oeuvre. Temporarily released from his Earthbound constraint, Who and his companion the ever delightful Jo Grant, journey to a bleak planet where a handful of colonists fight for their right to remain against the grasping intentions of mining conglomerate IMC. With no monsters as such, the six part adventure which deploys unusual levels of violence, speaks to the faceless power of capitalism, early environmentalism and the rights of communities. It's chief joy are the playful scenes between Pertwee's Dr Who and the Master played by the wonderful Roger Delgado, who pretends to be the adjudicator in the dispute between the colony and the company. Their scenes are a cocktail of ideas and exchanges that lift the hum drum, somewhat bleak story to the next level.
