Allure

People smoking their heads off does not for edgy drama make.

(Edit) 22/11/2018

The usual smoking protagonist who we're supposed to find hard, edgy and full of attitude, but who just comes across as a charicature.

Not to mention unsympathetic and driven to quite bonkers actions which a fully fleshed-out character in a decent film just wouldn't do. Evan Rachel Wood is capable of much better than this.

Gloria

Unrealistic in places

(Edit) 20/11/2018

When I was a long-time singleton, when I met someone, I didn't behave as Gloria does here, veering between commitment and complete insensitivity towards the poor guy. Despite great performances, I just can't relate to Gloria for this reason, so I was left ambivalent about her fate.

Happy End

Lazy film-making

(Edit) 08/11/2018

As tedious as usual, camera trained on some distant point for ages, characters unsympathetic, storyline unfathomable, film-making self-indulgent and apparently carried out to please the film-maker rather than the viewer. It certainly didn't please me, yet I kept on watching. Was I bored into submission??

The Shape of Water

Oscar-Fodder

(Edit) 27/10/2018

Stereotypical, dull and predictable rubbish which goes out of its way to tick all the boxes ready for Oscar night. Lonely singleton? Tick. Sensitive next-door neighbour? Tick. Annoying faux-french music? Tick. Cartoon Russians? Tick. Cardboard villain? Tick. Frankenstein's Monster-type Creature? Tick. Right, time to head to Hollywood.

Unsane

Incredible...and not in a good way!

(Edit) 23/10/2018

I really don't think someone would mistakenly commit themselves to a psychiatric facility, so as the whole film falls on this premise. The rest is just acting and accent practice for Claire Foy (American) and Juno Temple (Texas drawl). Nothing much else here is of much interest here, and if the Claire Foy character was less obnoxious, it might be a bit more interesting. "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" it most definitely ain't.

Worst Fears

Ropey Horror

(Edit) 17/10/2018

Stilted, wooden acting in this Hammer-Lite portmanteau of tales. Tries to be darkly comic, fails miserably, and ends up coming across as more amateurish than a village hall production, and a bigoted, prejudiced village at that.

Catch Me Daddy

A 15 certificate?? Really??

(Edit) 20/09/2018

A grindingly-realistic film with fantastic performances and hopefully a few actors we'll see again, but, and this has to be said, how much violence does a film have to have to merit an 18?

Jigsaw

Buckets of gore, and a decent ending

(Edit) 23/09/2018

Worth putting up with the dodgy acting and the faux toughness of so-called cops and caricatures of forensic scientists, because the surprise ending is a belter.

Mark Felt

A great alternative perspective to "All the Presidents Men"

(Edit) 04/09/2018

Some critics have unfairly slated this film, for instance, being unnecessarily picky over the fact that Mark Felt didn't "bring down the White House" as it says in the title. Who cares? This is a fine, suspenseful and atmospheric political thriller which shows Watergate and all the other sordid goings-on from the perspective of Deep Throat. Great performances all round. Come on you critics who are paid to properly appraise films: stop over-praising dross and give a magnificent piece of work like this the credit it deserves.

The Accountant

Number-crunching, bone-crunching!!

(Edit) 05/09/2018

An accountant who kicks ass?? A silly premise, but it very nearly comes off. Just a bit too long with irrelevant characters and a stupid ending, more concerned with setting up a sequel than rounding things off satisfactorily.

Most Beautiful Island

Well done for trying sonething different!

(Edit) 18/08/2018

Ana Asensio has done a great job in fashioning offbeat, creepy, different and sexy! And not a cigarette in sight in some misguided attempt to make someone look 'cool'. This film, and its director and star, are far, far above all of that.

David Lynch: The Art Life

David Lynch painting....I'd rather watch "Inland Empire!"

(Edit) 18/08/2018

There seems to be a raft of these types of meandering, inconsequential docs about famous types. Good luck David with your paintings, but I don't really want to spend an hour and a half watching you.

Hidden Figures

Offensively simplistic and stereotypical

(Edit) 12/08/2018

The subjects of this deserve better than this "us versus them" treatment. Why are all the other NASA employees stereotypically bigoted? Oh, and then they miraculously soften up by the end. Don't insult my intelligence!

The Case for Christ

Weighty fare handled beautifully

(Edit) 13/08/2018

More of a TV movie style than a film, but they've taken a weighty topic and made a great success out of it. Erika Christensen and Mike Vogel give fantastic performances. There are a few too many conveniently-parallel storylines between religion and real life, but nothing that ain't believable.

Force Majeure

A lot of snowy nothing

(Edit) 04/08/2018

I didn't realise from the over-hyped blurb (as always, the blurb-writing industry is a very lucrative one, is it not? sending mugs like me in the direction of artsy rubbish like this), that the avalanche happened near the beginning and, far from bidding a fond farewell to these self-absorbed and irritating types, we'd have to suffer them for the next two hours!
