I think this film would be absorbing to anyone who is interested in Mexican modern history. However, for the uneducated like me it is a bit dull as a film and I didn't particularly empathise with the main protagonist and there weren't any particularly interesting concepts. Another reviewer has written 'We observe the characters rather than engage with them' and I think that is a pretty apt description. Avoid.
Some friends gave this rave reviews but I gave up after three episodes in the first series. The characters are extreme personalities, with no-one particularly likeable. The plot was also pretty dull and unsophisticated. Avoid.
OK so the storyline is simple. But it's also pretty heartwarming, and there's a nice, not too in-your-face, moral to the story. It's very much about coming of age. I am not sure why it's listed as a comedy as the genuinely funny gags are sparse.
I have a lot of sympathy with JK's review, but I'm even harsher. It's beautifully shot but I just couldn't help but feel the film is pointless and weird. It's not really clear what you're supposed to take away from it. Yes it shows corruption and politics well but I think most viewers had a sense of how nuts it all was during the period anyway so I don't think the film adds any value there. We live in a golden age of film and television, so I would advise spending two hours of your life watching something more convincing.
...there's a moral to the story but it's not a very sophisticated one. Like other reviewers say, it's hard to identify with the protagonist and god knows how she maintains any friends.
I agree with the other reviewers that it is an interesting observation of medicine at the time, with some good acting.
However, I can't escape from the fact that it was extremely dull to watch. At 1 hour 51 minutes it could have been a lot shorter. I would not recommend.
Based on the public marketing I expected a trashy action film. Instead I was served a pretty hilarious comedy. This is great viewing! I was pleasantly surprised.
