This is a four episode series stretched out to fill eight episodes. It starts well, then after two or three episodes sinks into torpor. The numerous inconsistencies pile up until you cease to believe in, or care about, anything in the story - the characters, the plot, and especially who dunnit. Amy Adams is (as you'd expect) very good, but can't rescue the poor material (also I don't see how she could look that good given the amount of alcohol she's supposed to be putting away). Can't believe this is directed by Jean-Marc Vallee - he must have been on autopilot. A big disappointment all round.
The plot is formulaic, and the movie is in serious need of tightening up - it's too long and sags so badly in the middle that I nearly gave up on it. There were some nice moments, though, and it ended well. I just feel that Soderbergh could have done a better job if he'd been really trying.
