The Cinema Paradiso description relates to Enigma (2001) with Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet, not this film about infiltrating soviet intelligence in the 1980s. Take care which one you choose.
The basic premise of the story, a true one about the search for nazi looted art, sounded really interesting and rarely mentioned. The cast list also sounded good. But the script is appalling, and terribly hammed up. The music essentially screams at you to tell you how to feel, just in case you'd misunderstood the basic script, and often preceeded the actual event is was supposed to accompany. Terribly clunky plot elements following a very tired formula just meant it was predictable and dull, including the seemingly obligatory element of mainstream american films to have a 'patriotic' jibe at the enemy, whoever that happens to be, complete with stars and stripes.
If you're interested in the story, as I was, you'd be better off spending the time reading about it.
