This was such a quietly solemn and poignant film that was at different moments heartbreaking, harrowing and moving. So well cast and beautifully filmed, it really is a treat to watch. Recommended!
With lots of parallels to Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat, Godspell is a film with very strong religious themes that still manages to remain quite fun! With lots of uplifting messages about acceptance and kindness, and some very decent songs, it is a heartwarming if slightly zany romp through New York City in the 1970's. Definitely worth a watch!
Not a great story or a riveting pace, to be honest, and definitely a slow burn of a film. Having said that, it ended up being quite an endearing film at the finish, and I wasn't sorry I'd watched it! Some of the scenes are beautifully shot, and the acting isn't half bad, which definitely make up for the less than compelling plot!
We enjoyed watching Kes, which felt like a really important piece of historical film making - including working down the pits, getting caned at school and showcasing the Barnsley accent! Not a cheery film by any stretch, and quite harrowing in parts, but really good nevertheless! Recommended!
We enjoyed this film, which took us on a bit of a rollercoaster through the intimate, emotional, and at times fraught journey between two consenting adults, one of whom is paying for sex. With so many peculiar twists and turns, the story kept us on our toes until the very end. Two fantastic performances from the lead actors, Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack, with great supporting roles as well! Good film, but not one we'd ever probably have a hankering to watch again.
Absolutely loved this film! It was such a great, well thought out sequel to the original Candyman. Fantastic performances, moody shots and a bit of a gore fest in parts, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
If you can make it through the first 30 minutes of the film, you will be rewarded! But the opening 30 minutes is rather hellish to struggle on with - we had no idea what was going on or where the film was going and seriously considered hitting eject. The story as it unfolded after that was quite interesting and we enjoyed it. Lots of heavy hitters on the actor front as well - including a rather unexpected peek at William Dafoe's bottom! Enjoyed this and got into it eventually, but not sure we would recommend it!
We really enjoyed this film! The plot was an interesting one, the film was beautifully shot and the cast was fantastic. It was also an unexpected pleasure to find out that French and Saunders were in it!! Definitely recommended for anyone looking to keep their little grey cells stimulated!
We thought this film was great! Brilliantly shot with two stories - one fictional and one real - being woven together in parallel, with life imitating art throughout. Beautiful colours and imagery, and so well acted by Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. We could have done without the rather unusual opening scene; and were left feeling somewhat underwhelmed by the odd ending, but overall, a great film that we would definitely recommend.
Loved this film! It felt very much like a love letter to a bygone time, when life was simpler and technology was largely absent from daily life. Also featuring a great performance from a rather young John Laurie (who you might know better as Private Fraser in Dad's Army!). As others have said, it feels like a very unique film and a very unique story based on real-life events, and I would highly recommend the special features featuring director Michael Powell.
A great nostalgic look back at the bygone times when most haulage in the UK was done by canal boat. It was fun to spot the actors who went on to notoriety in other things (Eric Idle in Monty Python etc.!), and to see Ronnie Barker in his younger days! A good watch, but be prepared for some rather sexist overtones! Recommended!
Super disappointed with this film. Mary Anning is one of my heroes, and I thought this film would be an awesome walk through her life and her fossil finding, but there were hardly any fossils, no science, and nothing really about how she grew up! It was basically just watching people pee on the beach followed by a lesbian romp fest. Could not recommend.
What a spellbinding, devastating, brilliant film! Based on a true story, this is a proper tear jerker that is pretty much guaranteed to tug at your heart strings as the story unfolds. Brilliantly acted by the marvellous James Norton (the best villain, Tommy Lee Royce) and the startling new talent of Daniel Lamont. Very highly recommended!
Loved this film! What an absolute classic. Pretty much everyone knows the classic film line - "frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!" - but there's nothing quite like watching this 3.5 hour epic all the way through. It's clear to see why the film is a multi-Oscar winner, with an important period of history intertwined with a fantastic cast of characters, from loveable rogues to loveable no-nonsense housekeepers. Highly recommended!
It's so rare that I'm not able to finish a film, but I really found this to be totally unwatchable. The words spoken by the actors are barely audible at some points as they're overlaid with a bizarrely loud background music track. Had to give up 30 minutes in, and sadly could in no way recommend this film.
