After two poor opening matches in Argentina, losing to Peru 3-1 and an embarrassing 1-1 draw with Iran Scotland faced a powerful Dutch team - the '74 finalists. With Graeme Souness recalled in midfield, the Scots outplayed the Dutch with a spirited display. Jordan and Dalglish threatened throughout and Scotland gave their best ever World Cup performance in a pulsating match that saw Archie Gemmill score one of the World Cup's greatest ever goals to help Scotland on their way to a victory over eventual finalists Holland. Nonetheless it was not enough to prevent Scotland's elimination along with Iran, the reigning Asian champions who went out of the tournament winless.
