Set in New York on New Year's Eve 1981, the basis of the story is Martha Plimpton's character, who is throwing a New Year's Eve party. The story then spirals off to various couples that have been invited to the party and the events leading up to their arrival. If you are nostalgic for the 1980's you will probably enjoy this movie for the music and to have a look back at the fashions (and maybe like me, can't believe how truly horrible some of the clothes were!). Although not a deep insightful movie, it is a fun flick to watch. The most comedic moments were Jack (Jay Mohr) trying to discover why the night before he was picked to be somebody's first (the interplay of these two characters was definitely the funniest part of the movie); Paul Rudd (check out the sideburns) is trying to understand about the breakup of his relationship with Janene Garaofolo and is pouring out his soul to Courtney Love, who in turn has her eye on a bartender (Ben Affleck); Christine Ricci plays to perfection, complete with screeching accent a young Jersey girl out in the big city with her sidekick; along with a few other characters and of course, being New York, the taxi driver who everyone pours their heart out to. Oh and watch for a cameo appearance by Elvis Costello. Probably not a movie for everyone but all in all quite entertaining and a depiction of how much your life can change in one night!
