Synopsis:
A proud woman in red draws leers and admiration. A bosomy tobacconist sparks the fantasies of adolescent boys. A mentally challenged uncle takes refuge in a tree and announces: "I want a woman!" They are among moments and events knit by memory...and a legendary filmmaker in peak form. 'Amarcord', which means "I Remember", is Federico Fellini's lusty, often funny look at growing-up perhaps not unlike his own. The setting is a village in 1930's Italy. Teen hormones are surging. Family, church and friendship are proving grounds of love and loyalty. Fascism's rise is just down the street. Sex is around any corner. And life viewed in the local cinema is a touchstone for life lived. The memories, big and small, endure.

Fellini at his best

One of Fellini's best - Amarcord review by MonsieurK

For me, Amarcord ranks with La Dolce Vita and 8½ as the very best of Fellini - an apparently effortlessly fluid blending of the carnivalesque and the tender, of the deeply personal and the political. One quick factual correction - FG's review complains that the DVD obliges you to watch the dubbed English-language version. It doesn't. The set-up options allow you to select the Italian version with English subtitles. And the sound quality is perfectly fine.

Could do with a better digital version - Amarcord review by FG

What a shame to have to watch this dubbed in English as we were unable to achieve Italian with English subtitles. For such an important film we would have expected a much better digital version, cleaned up, with better sound and the usual choice of languages and subtitles. Still a masterpiece but in need of TLC.
