The Jews were not the only victims of the Nazi Holocaust. Half a million gypsies fell victim to the prison camps or were shot to death by the roadside as they fled in a vain attempt to escape from the German invaders. Dymitr, a Polish gypsy violinist, must lead his family and friends in a desperate bid for freedom. But he soon finds himself trapped by the Nazi's and deported to the dreaded symbol of the Holocaust: Auschwitz death camp. Under the cruel reign of Josef Mengele, the notorious Nazi doctor, Dymitr finds himself the helpless witness to shocking terrors and brutal experiments that see fellow gypsies, friends and ultimately family to their slow and hideous deaths.

An interesting, if overlong, film about Gypsy Victims of the Holocaust - And the Violins Stopped Playing review by PV

Spoiler Alert

This film dates from 1989 - one reason it perhaps feels a tad dated. However, it is well worth a watch - right up to the end when it reveals statistics about persecution of gypsies now and then.

Interesting to watch and learn.

DREADFUL dubbing - subtitles are cheaper to do. A shame they are not available.

4 stars.
