Synopsis:
Berlin, 1929: a metropolis in turmoil. Speculation and inflation are tearing away at the foundations of the young Weimar Republic. Growing poverty and unemployment stand in stark contrast to the excesses and indulgence of the city's night life and its overflowing creative energy. Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch), a young police inspector from Cologne, is transferred to Berlin. Together with stenotypist Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) and his partner Bruno Wolter (Peter Kurth), Rath is confronted with a tangled web of corruption, forcing him into an existential conflict as he is torn between loyalty and uncovering the truth.
With the political unrest and rising National Socialism, even an institution like the 'Rote Burg', Berlin's police headquarters is increasingly becoming the melting pot of a democracy whose days are numbered. This is 'Babylon Berlin'.

Dark and Compelling Thriller - Babylon Berlin: Series 1 and 2 review by GS

Spoiler Alert
21/07/2020

This crime thriller from Germany features the imminent collapse of the Weimar Republic following WW1. Against a background of fierce left and right wing street violence a brilliant young woman, Charlotte, struggles out of poverty to become a criminal assistant in Berlin's Police. Her detective partner is a war damaged veteran who struggles with truth, love, immorality and the need to find stability in an ever worsening crisis. At times brave and fearless and at other times corrupt and hypocritical, Gereon, finds himself falling in love with Charlotte whilst in the background the Nazi's are growing force for evil.

A brilliant piece of television and highly recommended for adults though some may find the subtitles a challenge to keep up with.

Excellent and entertaining series set in Berlin 1929 - Babylon Berlin: Series 1 and 2 review by PV

Excellent and highly entertaining crime drama set against the backdrop of 1929 Berlin, and its famous nightlife (see the movie CABARET).

OK so there are some faults. The subtitles are clearly not written by a native English speaker as there are some really odd phrases included. Also, there is some padding to create more episodes, I suspected - I was not a fan of all the extended dance routines in nightclubs. And Bryan Ferry makes an appearance with his 1970s song done in the style of 1929 (the word WHY entered my head at that point).

And for me, and with such a complex plot meandering around with so many characters looking the same or similar, it was a tad hard to keep up with it all at times.

However, overall very watchable and with the same actors one can see in many other German TV series such as GENERATION WAR (the main actor plating Gereon in this played Winter in that).
