- Synopsis:
Jean Fournier (Claude Mann), a young bank employee, is encouraged by his friend Caron (Paul Guers) to take an interest in gambling. After winning money in a game of roulette, he decides to vacation in Nice, where he falls in love with Jackie (Jeanne Moreau), a divorced mother who rarely sees her child. Though Jackie also enjoys Jean's company, she constantly warns him that her passion for gambling will always be greater. Jean becomes jealous of not having Jackie's full attention and has mixed feelings about gambling, yet he's somewhat seduced by this new risk-taking lifestyle. Despite Jackie's cool facade and alleged control over her choices - she claims she is unattached to the money itself, but rather the thrill of the game, and doesn't mind going from rich to poor in a matter of seconds - she soon begins to reveal her vulnerability and the emptiness she often feels as result of her addiction. - Actors:

Riding the crest of the New Wave, but... - Bay of Angels review by BB
A classic Jacques Demy film. This is one of the greatest films of the early New Wave with a heartbreakingly wonderful performance from Jeanne Moreau. However the description lists a plethora of extra features that were not on the Blu Ray disc I was sent.
Anyone who has an interest in the films of the Nouvelle Vague needs to see Bay Of Angels, but if you are tantalised by all the bonus features mentioned in the description you will be disappointed.

Blue Skies Turning Grey - Bay of Angels review by CH
Not perhaps now as well known as other Nouvelle Vague films, it features the South of France in a starring rôle, shimmering sea a contrast with a shuddeling roulette wheel which spins more frequently than each coming and going of the tide. A seductive Jeanne Moreau beguiles a dull Claude Mann into chancing his hand on an impossible future. An improbable series of wins appear to vindicate her, and there is an inevitable fall. Say no more, except that there is some fast editing typical of these films but, for all the incidental enjoyment (and Jeanne Moreau's bizarre hairstyle), Demy does not do enough to carry aloft a slight, perhaps magical tale with the panache of a Truffaut. That said, it should be seen by anybody who wants to cover all bases in post-war French cinema.
