- When graphic designer Oliver (Ewan McGregor) meets free-spirited Anna (Melanie Laurent) shortly after his father (Christopher Plummer) has passed away, Oliver realises just how much of a beginner he is when it comes to long-lasting romantic love. Memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 45 years, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energised, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life, encourage Oliver to open himself up to the potential of a true relationship.

Celebrity Pointless - Beginners review by CP Customer
A great performance by Christopher Plummer is completely wasted on this boring, pointless...romance? Ewan McGregor, with a pathetic attempt at an american accent spends most of his life dwelling on memories which seem entirely unremarkable and forgettable whilst seemingly being more in love with his dad's dog than the infinitely more attractive Mélanie Laurent who in turn is clearly bit too wacky to spend more than a night with.

Adorable dog - Beginners review by TB
An adorable dog and a great acting performance by Christopher Plummer is all I can say about this film. Unfortunately it didn’t capture me at all as it was an all over the shop and rather boring romance and character assessment.
I stuck with it but shouldn’t have really bothered. Disappointing.
