Once upon a time there was a beautiful young girl who lived in a far away kingdom, set in a stylized, 1950's England. She loved her father (David Warner) dearly but stood up to Claudette (Kathleen Turner) her wicked social-climbing stepmother and malicious stepsisters, Goneril and Regan. Thrice-married Claudette is fed up. Having found out her new husband can't afford to give her a life of luxury, she plots to poison him in order to move on to another target. Cinderella (Marcella Plunkett) realises her father is in mortal danger and frets over how to foil her evil stepmother's plans. Luckily, Cinderella also has a thing about water and happens upon a magical mermaid behind a waterfall. Mab (Jane Birkin), takes a liking to the girl, and when the chance to go to the royal ball comes Cinderella's way, Mab, in true fairy godmother style, whips up a stunning frock in blue chiffon and sends her off to her destiny. Unfortunately, her destiny takes the shape of the slacker Prince Valiant. Cinderella ignores him for most of the evening until he leaps on stage and performs wildly with his rock band. The two singletons properly clock each other and become inseparable-until midnight! After Cinderella disappears, Valiant begins his frantic search. He hunts high and low for a foot to fit the shoe. When he reaches Cinderella's home, she refuses to try it on until he makes certain commitments to ensure everyone gets what they deserve.
Very interesting take on Cinderella directed by Beebon Kieran (oranges Are Not the Only Fruit). Kathleen Turner makes a terrific villain and Jane Birkin makes a very interesting mermaid.
