Synopsis:
As his fiftieth birthday approaches, life holds no fears for Stephen Fleming (Jeremy Irons), a respected Conservative Member of Parliament and Junior Minister marked by the Prime Minister for high ministerial office. Secure in his enduring marriage to Ingrid (Miranda Richardson), he has no premonition of the storm that is about to engulf him when he meets Anna (Juliette Binoche) at an embassy cocktail party. Although she is already involved in a relationship with his journalist son, Martyn (Rupert Graves), she acknowledges the immediate physical bond between them and they are quickly enmeshed in a passionate affair.
Stephen is unwilling to break free from his obsession with Anna and continues to maintain the facade of normality. The relationship intensifies despite the announcement of Martyn and Anna's engagement. When tragedy finally and inevitably strikes, Anna is a survivor and it is Stephen and his family who must pay the price.

Damaged - Damage review by DB

Spoiler Alert
29/01/2011

I didn't like this film. I had wanted to see if for quite some time but when I did, it didn't live up to my expectations.

Jeremy Irons did his typical speaking looks and saying nothing much. The intimate moments were improbable, looked uncomfortable and well nigh impossible. I can't understand why an actress of the calibre or Juliette Binoch was even in it.

I did not like the story and the dialogue was somewhat dire...

To be honest I turned it off after 30 minutes and mailed it back, I was that disappointed in it, maybe times have just moved on.

Try it for yourself, but be warned that it may not be to your taste.

Excellent drama with a huge editing error - Damage review by AER

Spoiler Alert

Huge editing mistake forgiven that renders some of the story slightly nonsensical, Louis Malle's (almost) last film is the type of British film you don't see anymore. Jeremy Irons played a lot of these types of sexually virile lunatics in high-powered jobs back then and this was one of his most pathetic. His Tory MP has an affair with his own son's mysterious (quiet) girlfriend played by Juliette Binoche. They have a lot of athletic sex and then disaster strikes but not as melodramatically as you may think... we're British godammit (HOLD THE LINE on those tears and emotions).... I saw this on release in early 1993 and unlikely many films from that time it still works and does the job. It sketches emotionally blocked characters deftly but not deeply. Louis Malle gives this a light touch andI'm glad I revisited it.

Look out for David Thewlis and Peter Stormare in very early small roles.
